i just picked up some antique kitchen scales for a complete bargain here in Devon. All complete and working but rusted up like anything. I'm gonna media blast and restore back to new with back to original hand painted logos to be done by a sign writer artist mate
of mine

I want to paint with rattle cans once all prepped up, am I correct that the order of painting will be etch primer, followed by 'normal' primer then top coat and finally lacquer once the artwork is done?

If this is wrong can someone please advise as I know nothing about spray painting and was just planning to buy stuff from halfords

Towcester isn't in Devon!

They may look abit odd with laquer over paint. Thay are antique sales not a new car.

You may be better off with some smooth/hammerite on the plain metal, depending on what it is, casr iron I presume.

Aldi/Lidl metal paint is good too.

I will post pictures when I get home as my phone won't allow me to do that without wifi.

I want to try and do justice to the sign writing which my mate is gonna do cause he is simply brilliant. I'm open to suggestions on the best paint system, type or technique as I know nothing. Reason for original songs is cause the scale is called a VIBRATOR and is made by Weylux, I thought it would look quite cool in the kitchen with gold leaf lettering to replicate the original but only better

make sure the paint your mate will use will be compatible with the aerosol paint you intend to use

SWMBO's shop is signwritten. the boards/walls are B&Q fortress gloss paint and the sighwriter just paints over that. No need to varnish or laquer over. Infact I think hee just uses gloss paint to be hones. he ran out of white and asked me if we had any whire glos he could use.

As long as the paint isn't going to get rubbed on a daily basis, it should be ok without being laquered. Yout mate the sign writer should know though.

The original does look like some sort of transfer but as I don't know anything about stuff like this it's out to you guys. I've arranged to leva e sces at mates house when I get home so he can understand what needs to be relocated and how, hopefully he can advise on paint type too

iirc then the older ones has wee brass plaques on. then transfers after that. old 30's style transfers has a large margin round them, but used to get scratched.

What colour is the original and do you plan to keep it the same, or fancy a change? If it's black, consider POR-15?

If you're looking for the authenticity outcome? then brush paint it as spraying it will eventually become scraped/scratched with use.

If they're antique then chances are they where never sprayed when made ie the paint back then in 1900's and before was leaded and never a primer applied.

At the moment it's a lighting blue colour that's very heavily rusted, I will post up some pics when I get home and yes it probably was never sprayed just brush painted. I will see what you say when pics have been posted

If you wanted to be completely authentic you can create the lettering on the pc and print it onto water slide transfer paper.

I've never heard of that. Sounds interesting and will definitely look into it
