get a cat,much more efffective than a dog and needs less upkeep....mine presents a mouse each morning right at my step as he knows this makes me happy
That's mice though they are no good for rats. They like easy stuff to kill. Brother in law have farm cats and they just watch the rats go past.
Was a program on about polecats on TV and there favourite prey is rats. They were persecuted as they were often found near poultry sheds and farmers thought they were after the poultry but in fact they were after the rats which lived there. Seemingly rats don't stop long when they smell one.

Nah, i used to have ferrets and i can tell you they will kill anything they come across, they are one of natures serial killers, complete predators.
Back in 81 i worked at a boatyard in old Leigh, we had a big rat problem due to piling works on a nearby wharf driving them out. We had a couple of big Nipper style traps that had been upgraded with gripfast nails (these were as dangerous to the trapper) plus a couple of old gin traps, though illegal these were lethal if set alongside a wall with a bit of ply leaning on the wall to give the illusion of a tunnel. We were catching 4 or 5 a day for weeks.
I remember one small rat that had the misfortune to run across one of these, the jaws crashed up catching him by the tip of his nose & his tail, balls & ******* at the other end. Stone dead. Made us all wince i can tell you!
Oxy propane is also very effective down the holes when ignited & is now available as a proprietary system used for wholesale rat control.
But if you really want to get rid of them poison is the best, keep putting it down until they cease taking it.

Gas them with the fumes from an engine, i know you said you cant use poison, but vermin seem to like the sweet taste of antifreeze
come across several usefull weapons for rat bashing.
number 1 has to be sulphor, mix it dry and coarse with a mild oxidiser so it just sizzels away when lit. stuff the mixure into paper cardoard tubes, light it stuff down several holes hole then stamp the entrance to that hole down when you see smoke out of another hole stamp that one. migt se one or two rats get out but they don't go far.

waste thinners and an airline. pouring petrol / thinners down a hole and lighting it dosent do much unless you put an airline down the hole entrance as well.

We had a dead rat at work, at first we thought it was a blocked sewer until we eventually gave in and started moving stuff looking for it. The wimmin in the office went round the workshop every day for weeks spraying an armoury of weapons-grade air fresheners that had me gagging more than the dead rat. I realised the honk was strongest in a particular area so I was on all fours when someone lifted a box and there it was. It had just got to the stage where it was starting to stain the carpet.
Dug it up with a bit of card and hoyed it into the field next door... but not before taking it on a tour of the secretarial office for revenge

I well believe it. I don't really like any of the mustalids or what ever the polecat/ferret/mink family are called, horrible things really. A friend of a friend gave me a ferret that had never been handled as a youngster, i should have know when he turned up with it and wouldn't put his hand near it. Vicious little barsteward of a thing gave me a right doing, i had scar all over my hands, it got a bit better but was never trustworthy.
