Not a lot has happened in crawler land for quite some time.
Howard Gem
Stalled, requires gearbox rebuild which I am intending to do, however this will take a solid days worth of work to figure out. I also want to fully clean and possibly repaint the gearbox casting whilst I have it stripped.

Make one good one from two early ones. The parts machine is going to a local tractor breakers, the old boy there takes old machines and works on them. I've not much hope for the old thing but if it can make at least another one run, that is something. The better one is continuing along, albeit slowly. The sickle bar looks better off the later one but the tines off the early one I got blasted, so they're going to have to be swapped over. Again, a solid day to figure all this out.

Hasn't been turned on in months and I couldn't get it started last weekend but it did fire. I think it flooded, I'm still having trouble with the needle and fuel leaking. Needs more work.

Been given tentative notice that operations need to wind up within the year. Inevitable. Tidying up the bank balances which means selling off a lot of unused/obsolete gear I've managed to hoard in order to go for pre-approval mid year, then look for a property of my own. It's possible some of these machines won't be coming with me, some things I would like to keep such as the lathe, drill, workbench (has cast iron legs) and my hydraulic press.
I'm not necessarily in a rush to make this all happen (not a fire sale) but it's marching along at a steady pace. No pics, it all looks the same as last time, like the luftwaffe left it....

Went on a trip to a hydroelectric power station built in 1924 today. Original pelton wheels still in place built by MetroVick. How cool is that? Then a ‘modern’ one from 1994. Some very nice travelling cranes in that place!
A few months ago, in an effort to make life harder for myself, I bought two old jack stands. I love vintage workshop gear so these looked perfect. One is in good order, the other was badly welded, such are the joys of buying from online auctions that deliberately hide damage. I’ve cut the welds off and ground back to ‘sort of’ flat, then put a piece of plate across and I’m drilling and tapping to m5 (got a heap of 4.2mm drills and m5 taps off a job I did) before welding the plate to the cast. Don’t you just love it? Then I’ll probably waste more money and get them blasted and paint them orange, as they’re meant to be.

Not sure if I’ve previously mentioned the 1890s lawn roller on this thread, but it’s been knocking around here since around July. It’s very nice, but very worn. The handles are gone, and one of the cast pieces that hold the roller onto the frame cracked so today I pinned down my old boss and he brazed it back together for me.
I do like all this old garden equipment. A nice lawn roller like this is quite hard to find. I’ll do the rollers next, that’ll be a day of wire wheeling. Might get these cast end bits blasted.

Yesterday was the VCC swap meet and I always go. Heaps of bargains and cool things. I bought this 1920s Jeunesse fireplace, enamel is near mint, it’s a little coal fireplace. That’ll go in a house when I buy one, for $250 I couldn’t resist.
Then, another big pulley for a plant stand in the industrial garden. Probably off a massive compressor.
Lastly a side valve spring compression tool. $10, rude not to. Not a cheap tool.

Drop a tab of acid and wake up to that staring at you!
Just finished tidying up this nice Yankee tap wrench, some helpful soul had pumped grease into it which cemented it solid. Singing again, minus grease with oil instead.

It’s my day off. First day off in ages I’ve had just to myself. Took the car for a WoF, passed, then rewarded myself with a prosciutto and tomato sandwich. Was gonna get chicken katsu but they wanted $17 minimum! Daylight robbery.
So, some Howard Gem progress. Gearbox ripping madness. Throwing a rag into gears stops them moving, a great tip an old fitter told me. All the manuals and forums online say ‘just remove the clutch pack’ well, I would, but it was stuck solid. I bought this little Facom puller for a song a few years ago, it’s one of the best I own. That got the seized clutch out, look at all that lovely stuff in the bell housing.
Lastly, this pinion shaft is causing me grief, I can’t get it to budge. It’s pulling a bearing through a housing which isn’t helping. I’ll get it, maybe give it a blast of heat, but for now I’m happy that I’ve made some progress. I want the box empty so that I can clean it and paint it prior to rebuilding with a mix of both gearbox parts.

Found a way to get the shaft out, if I used two 3/4 sockets as spacers then smacked a ball joint tool over the shaft into the sockets. Rough, but it worked. All the splines are seized on this machine, nothing is coming apart easily.
Now I can clean and paint the bare casting.

Before, and after. This is the bell housing the clutch sits in, and it’s supposed to be completely dry. The oil seal that came with the machine has leaked badly. I might be able to salvage the other one, or I machine a new top hat for an existing size lip seal to go in.
I decided to give it a repaint and ground out the drain a bit to make it easier to flow into. This casting bolts onto another ring of cast metal so I don’t think it’ll weaken it much. One step closer…

Got the internals cleaned then it was off for a water blast, that cleaned off the last of the crud trapped in corners.
Then, a coat of primer inside. It’s gone cold as the sun has gone, so I’ve stopped for tonight. The rest needs priming and then painting orange.

First orange on. I’m going to do one coat, and then another once a lot more bits are on. This bar goes at the back, and the bolts protrude slightly inside the box. This threebond stuff is really good so the bolts got a coat of that.
I use this little Milwaukee M12 impact screwdriver for wire wheeling things like threads, it’s brilliant. I only bought it to match my 1/2 M12 impact but it’s had a mountain of use I never anticipated.
