Would you buy a used one ? I've always wanted one but I'm not that brave ,or am I wrong ,what's your thought guys ? . My daughter has just bought the 2017 RR autobiography and it's stunning FSH 70thou miles just over 20g's

I've bought 4 1/2 in the past.

First was a 2007 TDV8, second a cheap runaround 4.6V8 P38, third (still got) a 4.4TDV8 and 4 and 4.5 were again 4.6V8 P38s.

The 07 I wasn't using as much, needed to free up some cash and wasn't going to sell the Defender. All the P38s have become parts donors. The 4.4 we still have.

Talking exclusively about the L322s now they're not actually that bad to work on. The V8s (I wouldn't bother with the Td6, go for a TDV8 or supercharged depending on type of journeys you do). I work on an assumption of (particularly the diesels) if they haven't done a average of 10k/year mileage then be wary of them and look at them closely. Particularly the diesels like to be driven and worked, sitting idle does them no favours.

I've just got ours MOTd after a busy year where it sat idle for most of it and just done a 450 mile drive in it today up to Scotland. Forgotten how effortless it is to drive, okay not the best on fuel but we did have a full boot, two labs in the back seats and a 16ft trailer with Argocat on the back.

I went one better and worked there for a few years

I've seen what's inside them and how complex they are so wouldn't buy a new one.

and even then they dissolve like an aspirin ,,, nope , I wouldnt take one as a gift let alone actually buy one , I see too many big bills and tales of woe every singleweek , [ Im fixing these day in day out at the moment] . And yes I know I will get the usual , best car Ive ever owned etc etc Ive had one thats never even needed a bulb swapped etc etc , but ass Ive said Im seeing the other side of that argument every day and have been doing so for nearly a year now.

In the next year the rear arches rusted so much it wouldn't pass an MOT. Sat in my yard for 18months now because I don't have time. Bloody mistake. Still a nice drive - comfy, fast, powerful. Think I could get the money pit back on the road for another 1500 - I don't have the time or money to throw at it but it's worthless as it sits.

Just my story.

I only wanted one while I got the defender back on the road. I bought my old 5 series back from my sister last Christmas for next to nothing. It's comfy, reliable, economical, easy to work on and isn't dissolving in front of my eyes.

I do a fair few of those wheel arches / jacking points ,,, they are a pita , , if your lucky its not too bad , if its bad its tragic , I have one on the go at the moment , but due to my friends ill health [ mnd] Im doing more spanner work than tin bashing at the moment. dont let it sit for too long or you will be doing brakes too.

Back right was gone before I parked it up (either that or a bearing). It's really depressed me - caught up buying something i fancied and it's been a big mistake and reminds me of it every time I look at it!

Had three "Classics" - two 2 door and a 4 door. Nice and simple to work on and parts reasonable price. However all three got broken for parte due to severe body rot even though chassis were still sound. Carb models more than a bit thirsty but EFi not so bad. I'd have another if I could find a rot free example

I bought a 96 P38 Diesel 6 years ago for £1000 as it shows a gear box fault ( flashing Prindle lights) but drives fine
They a painfully underpowered, but a good work horse its towed all sorts, first 3-4 years it was used a lot but the last 2 it does a couple of thousand miles each year, I often contemplate selling it but when the weathers bad or for towing its excellent so for what it costs to keep I keep it.

Where to they fit the old sandwiches? No, sorry that was Longbridge.
I did have a low comp 1980 Rangey which would start on the handle and a 1982 Monteverdi 4 door version.

Similar experience to sako243. I've got a 2008 TDV8 & love it. Mate has one, he's the same, another mate has the 4.4L & he too loves it! I've just finished doing a CV joint (gator perished & then the joint sh@t its ABS ring while being pushed out so just got a bit longer) and have done the sills & arches. As everyone says, can get very expensive but they are lovely cars, effortless towing, very good offroad & super comfy. If you're happy to do a bit of spannering yourself and have a bit of money to spend on the big jobs then they're a good car to own.

i once had a 95 p38 4.0 v8 with a very rare manual gearbox.

was a riot to drive. nothing went wrong with it after i swapped the thermostat and rad to fix the overheating issue that caused it to be sold to me. loved that thing. hated the fuel economy.

and the air suspension still worked!

I've had two - the first one was over 100k miles, 4.4SDV8, the only significant repairs were rear ARC pipes and oil cooler leaking. I'd still have it now if my driving distance hadn't changed making a DPF equipped diesel the less optimal version. One of my sons has it now doing 250 miles a week with no issues.
The one I have now is a later 5.0l petrol, other than a few cosmetic parts, nothing else to do.
I used to work in a LR dealers when the L405 was new, including the 2017 'tech-lift'. Remember these were built to a ~£140k price tag - yes, there could be build quality issues, as with all marques, I've seen far worse with Audi & M-B of a similar age. You get a lot of car for your money, despite what the luddites think, it simply doesn't go wrong on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis.

Both have in the main, just been there to drive, i had an L322 for a year, it devoured my weekends with an evolving list of jobs to do, none were critical, all were necassary, I moved to an L405 with no regrets at all.

Discovery 2 and Freelander 2 are my only forays into the world of the green oval and I thoroughly enjoy the ownership of the current one. A nice late model soft dash Classic would be my dream car.

I had a soft dash for about 5 years- great car on ‘proper’ lpg installation with gas tanks in place of the petrol tank.
It was never quite as satisfying as a slightly older hard dash 3.9 though, but I can’t quite place why that was. Maybe it was just a bit innocuous inside compared to the solid previous versions.
