He won't have to worry about his car passing the MOT, unless there is an axle stand I can't see, he wont have any legs to drive it relying on that trolley jack.

why wouldnt he just want to do it correclty, its not like its a hard place to get to,

i do agree though would like to be a fly on the wall when the tester looks at that.

Where do you start with this sort of welding.... and he thinks it fine?

1) You could ask him nicely to sell off all his tools as he is a menace to himself and to others on the road, since he hasn't got that little bell in his head that sounds a warning when something is not right.

2) Get him really sloshed and after he passes out, put all his tools and gear out on the road with a "All free, please take it away " sign next to the gear. You would be doing him and the community a favour, and the beauty of this is, that when he wakes up you can tell him that it was his idea .

NO, that doesn't work. Put them out with a sign saying £50 for the lot. Then the 'lifters' realise there is some value there.......

Before the rest of the lynch mob arrives it's worth mentioning that while the old metal hasn't been cut out and it's not a restoration repair the standard of welding looks reasonable. Also the job is clearly not finished. And we've not seen the original thread so the fellow might be **** taking.

It's awfully easy to judge people you don't know. More constructive to be there and offer advice, and if the advice isn't accepted leave it until later. Ultimately if this sort of thing is done badly the MOT man is the best judge.

Hmm, I think it is finished in his head. He hasn't welded behind the shock because he can't work out how to undo it from the top. He also hasn't welded the bit in front of the shock as his patch is too big to get to the folded seam.

I'd be concerned that he is going to throw some underseal over it, a bit of dirt and it might pass an inspection like that. Given this is a welding forum, I think the criticism is valid and the original poster might like to refer the guy to this thread so see what we think of it - not much from my point of view, but I'm a hobbyist and armchair critic

Sorry Malcolm, but I disagree with you about the standard of welding being reasonable, although the picture isn't high resolution enough for a really good look, from what I can see it appears that there are a few spot welds that look OK from a distance but the rest are; what's the polite term?... bird poop. He has totally missed the joints in some areas or blown through them, left the rusty metal behind and not welded it completely.

Let me ask you this, if you were going to buy this car for your kids and on closer examination you saw this welded repair would you still buy it and be happy about the repair? I sure wouldn't. I would not trust my life or anyone elses in it, structurally they are not sound welds. If it wasn't important to the structural strength of the vehilcle then the car manufacturer would not have put that section in there.

And while we may all enjoy (especially me) having a giggle and a laugh about this at this persons expense, on a serious note, the consequences of this sort of repair on a car that is going on the road is a serious concern, but I am sure the MOT will fail anyway so this may be a moot point. Just my 2 cents worth.
