Random engines

[Kayos]

Called at a "salvage" yard today (it's attached to a skip hire place) and they had a couple of stationary engines. No idea what they were but I'm planning to go back for some ladders as I didn't have a roof rack on.

Anything to look for, avoid, buy regardless?

I will get some pics if I can but if they are silly cheap I might just buy for the sake of it, one was on a small trailer and looked a fun project

Depends what they are really, not much value in stationary engines unless they're something unusual really.

Steam/stationary/classic cars/bikes/tractors - it's all just sitting in a field for a weekend chastising someone for using the wrong shade of green

I'm the same, as long as I'm happy with the result I don't care what others think.

Some engines are worth much more than others but there's very few that arent worth dragging out of a muddy puddle given the price of scrap..

I really don't bother I have a 1963 Norton and its nowhere near standard its pretty much a racer but I like it

I'm in danger of taking my own thread off topic and I loved that car, on and off road. I defended it to everyone who said it wasn't a proper off roader etc etc. But the Disco is 10 times the car and I should have bought one sooner

Our dad has a couple of little factory trucks/tractors, he had a bloke stand there, read the copy of the original 1960 brochure for the machine and then declare to dad that it was very obviously a home made machine blah blah blah, and nothing our dad could do, no matter how much the brochure was waved in his face, or the copy of the original receipt from the council it was bought by , this guy was adamant it was something we'd built from scrap. No matter what you do, there's always some weirdo at a show that will come and tell you it's wrong.

Had a really strange guy the other month watch us run the merlin up at a display, then go into a long rambling description of how he could tell because of the noise that it's got shim tappets...... which is odd, because it doesn't. And you'd need ears like a bat to be able to differentiate between the exhaust note and valve train noise on that thing at 2k revs
