Jacking up a livestock shed

I remember reading of a farmer raising the height of his potato store, featured in FW, used a MF Tractor’s hydraulics connected to rams on each stantion. Managed to get all the rams to lift the same amount. Pretty sure there will be something similar on YouTube.

Just discovered how to find an old thread,and as I’ve been able to post photos for a number of years,I’m following this up,the idea of lifting the roof is being resurrected,time passes doesn’t it. View attachment 276345

Not missed much in the last ten years then How high you going?
I would get plates to fit inside H beams with lots of holes in them, drill 2 holes in each H beam and cut through the beam between the holes and bolt the plates together each side of the beam. Weld a jacking plate top side of the holes remove one bolt and start jacking up the legs one at a time to the next hole and clamp up again. Keep going round the beams just lifting one hole at a time till you reach the height you require. Weld in a new piece of H beam and probably plate over the welds for extras.
Remember to unbolt and brace lean to first

I am definately not a structural engineer more of a bodgineer and never tried anything like this before the thoughts above were personal and just me thinking out loud, if in doubt consult an expert in this field.

A friend raised his whole house roof by simply jacking it up an inch at a time, with a bottle jack and tubing, going round and round, and adding 1” spacers as he went, then it was finally nailed back into place with suitable support. This was a corrugated iron roof on a wooden truss system in a land far far away. But the methods would work on steel framed I assume.

from the look of it

its a steel beam 4 poster apex roof with a lift gantry fastened to the apex roof depending on the height the owner wants

he could strip off the roof apex side of it and lift the roof higher using the steel beams to fasten the new lift

swapping what you have onto the right side and left side



personal opinion take the roof off and rebuild the whole lot higher using what you have already and build on top of your roof beams

I had a semi regular number when I had my last workshop making stools for want of a better word. They were a three legged thing with a screw on the top. Like a big machinist Jack.

It was for a guy who jacked up buildings and more impressively, wind pumps. They sink a lot on the Norfolk broads. He had a steel frame which bolted around the inside as low as possible which had a load of hydraulic jacks ran back to a control desk. Just worked them to get the building higher / level

my stands then went in, screw adjusted up to the frame, and one his gear was out they back filled with concrete.

Never saw it done. Was always busy but I wished I had made time really. He did the windmills with a plumb Bob down the middle and a mark on the floor.

principle may be of use but I think in this case it’s a rebuild job that tin never seals up properly when you re use it though.

Thanks for all the help and ideas,@gaz1 ,don’t fully understand yours though,apart from principles of building from top upwards.i want to go up 1.2-1.5m,will



acrows will have the torque,too coarse a thread ?was thinking of a gusset for a jack,but the hi lift seems much quicker,tbh I don’t mind replacing the roof sheets,not the best,ultimately would like a travelling crane ,so can sacrifice the stanchions once the lift is complete,fitting short cantilever stubs to carry existing rafters.

your lifting the whole lot and making it into a squarer looking building

I beam post at either ends and in the middle bolt place another beam on top

I believe your building is designed on a 4 post design with an apex sloted on top of it from what i can see from your pic

the red is the new shape
