Bit of an update today, old man is staying with me over the summer (long storey) so thought it was a good idea to clear out the workshop and make a space for the bench that the lathe will sit on. All was going to plan with me on my own clearing a space, moving things around etc. Then once mum decided to chuck him out of the house he decided to come help me, very quickly it went wrong. You don't need to do that, why are you doing this, it doesn't need to be that strong, ive never done that before, do you know what your doing.

After a tense 10 minutes we made good progress for the remainder of the morning to get the table in, top on and levelled out. Lathe will be moved into position next weekend when some help arrives. I've got to negotiate concrete, grass and gravel then lift it into place and engine crane won't work or fit through the space

After the week ive had, I had some me time in the workshop.

A salvaged electronics work bench has been modified with new work top and stainless steel back along with some heavy bracing to make a solid table. All set level on the floor and lathe installed.

Quick check revealed that some of the cables had seen better days so these were all replaced, followed by some light cleaning, inspection and lubrication.

Bravely plugged it in and bingo, it goes round and the vari speed works sort off, no way of measuring the speed but it's definately giving me top speed but not the stated 270rpm, just isn't spinning that slowly. Further inspection suggests that moving cone pulley on the lay shaft (look at me talking all technical) isn't moving as freely as it should. Next mission is to take it all apart and see what's up. The outer fork and bearing were simple to remove, quick once over with a scotch pad, clean and regressed bearing, second fork is a little more complicated and I run out of time.

On another note, I'm interested in a 4 way tool post or quick change tool post. What do you guys recommend/suggest ? Internet is full of stuff but don't know what is ok or what will fit
