radiator question

the bathroom radiator is rusting here and there.
so thinking of getting it powder coated.
would the p/coating be ok on this or would it melt?

Depends on where the rust is - it might be coming through from the inside, in which case it's replacement time............

I remember offering to patch a neighbours radiator, it had a pin hole at the bottom, soon grind that back with the Dremmel and weld a 10p size patch into it.

Spent an hour chasing the corrosion right across the bottom before deciding the local scrappie was going to get some more rusty scrap, it was wafer thin.

If you struggle to get a radiator of the exact length for the existing pipe-work, you can get various extension pieces if the rad is just a few inches short. It will save you from altering the existing the pipe-work.

this is a fairly new one only a couple of years old.
it started to go rusty in the 1st year.
it is just surface rust but it is places where I can't get at

i just sandblasted the patchy rust of the daughters radiators sanded them up and sprayed with smoothrite paint and they look new

if its just surface rust then skim it if you want to do then coat it with radiator paint again if you cant skim it treat it with a rust inhibitor and them use radiator paint

if really rusty replace it is best but if a single up it to a double if you can

the old cast iron ones can be split and repaired

Since no one has answered this question, I will. It will be fine powder coated, a central heating radiator will never get hot enough to cause the powder coating a problem.

I've got an old cast iron free-standing radiator in our kitchen that I got shot-blasted and then powder coated, it looks great but I have to agree with the others, unless the radiator is something special surely it's cheaper just to replace ?

Yeah powder coating is more expensive than a replacement,plus a replacement will give you that added benefit of free from gunge.

make sure the system has a decent amount of inhibitor in it to stop the rads sludging up...and rusting from the inside.

and fit a magnaclean filter inline to pick up sludge and-iron-particles up

The original question re melting is that it will not melt as it takes 180 190 deg to 'cure' the powder, rads will only be at 80* ish
So its ok with flat panel welded rads, with cast iron radiators ---Powder coating produces a good finish, BUT they are not designed to go through the prolonged baking process so there is a very real risk that the seals between sections can be damaged which will lead to leaking radiators.

after cleaning out your system --fit the magnaclean and fill with inhibitor. if a new boiler is fitted on your system-there fitted as part and parcell . ive just cleaned my filter after 11 month and the crap in it is unreal
