Radial fly in/merlin demo selby

If anyone’s interested there’s a radial fly in at breighton airfield near selby this Sunday. Me and my boss will be there with the merlin doing engine runs al day so if anyone fancies calling in for a chat by all means

i honestly couldnt tell you on either count! aircraft obviously dependant on the weather.

Sod that, I look at planes all day long. The boss wont be going in his as I have the wiring loom on the floor

30quid might cover hanger access as well, might be a cheaper pass than that

Went well, some beautiful aircraft flying including a Fokker dr1 triplanes rep merlin ran well and we got some cracking shots of her spitting flames ! Weather was unbelievably hot, ended up burnt to a crisp. Here’s a video when we were messing about at the end of the day :

Can I use my one silly question per month voucher on your threads?

As these are static display engines do you run them on normal 95/85 pump fuel? Do they have hardened exhaust valve seats anyway or did you fit them during overhaul? Do you use one of the 'valve saver' additives?

Amazing flying machines, and magnificent men!
I had a trawler that was built in Selby, in Cochrane's Yard on the Great Ouse. Probly a retail park now..
( Ross, Cat class '57 sidewinder, Ruston and Hornsby motors, dynamos by Crompton Parkinson 110v DC for the sailors on here..)
There is/was a very ancient wooden pub, can't remember the name, and the landlady was staunchly off grid, 'you drink your pint by candle light'
Lovely cathederal as well.

It will run on pump fuel but usually we run it on avgas. Valve seats are hardened anyway, no additives used. Certainly not a silly question, in fact I asked the same thing when I started working here!

In all honesty.... we were trying to do it. It’s a bit of a crowd pleaser! Basically the merlins and meteors have 4 primer jets in the inlet manifolds to aid starting, over prime and you get nice coughs of flame. She was also just on the booster coil- the mags were switched off hence the slight fire over and then die again.

We were also experimenting with starting it without the starter...... basically, fill the cylinders with fuel/air, get it on the right stroke and flick the booster coil and she does fire sometimes

I honestly don’t know, there were people coming and going, our mate came and they just waved him through!
