I wont be doing much heavy steel either im going to make trusses for a shed but could weld them with the arc, most of my fabrication will be box section, no more than 4 or 5mm wall.

Anyway....about the welder. Lets just say there are a lot of opinions around on the forum allready. I have never sold this brand but several customers have bought them only to find that this very British company are importing them from PRC!!

Call me stoopid but i take it that that is the peoples republic of china not good welders then best to stay clear!!

you would be talking about portamig/mta (english brand )as opposd the thermal arc then?

Yes, I think Gasman's talking about Butters, not Portamig although Portamig's inverter tig machines are imported, their transformer ones are all assembled here.
Again, not all Butters machines are from China, in fact I think it may also only be their tigs, their migs I believe are eastern european?

No not particularly english makes Weldequip is sending me details on his portamig range they sound good with low and high output.Didnt mean chinese welders are bad just that people importing them and rebadging them could possibly lead to bad backup due to lack of consistencey in the manufacture of them. sorry if i seemed to make little of your thermal arc!!!

Apologises not required ,i don't care what anybody else thinks about any of my kit ........you should see some of the crap i have got ,,,aldi ,silverline ,i'm not a snob ......if it works ,its good enough ,but the thermal cost less than a clarke 130 by quite a bit and works well enough for me .....built in malaysia i think ,but i wouldn't pay new price for it ........Gav

Been looking on flea bay at the moment about a new mig welder and came across an r-tech 200 amp mig for £565. Does anyone have any experience of these machines or are they best left well alone? Sorry i dont have the expertise to post a link to it either. Really not too good at this whole computer carry on!!! Maybe ill get better at it with practice (much the same could be said about my welding!!)

Portamig/techarc/MTA migs are indeed manufactured in the UK.
Butters/thermal arc also have a good pedigree imo although as mentioned have been known to import from Europe/far east.

Ah, the R-Tech ones that the thread was originally about, hence why it's called 'r tech mig'! We all got a bit waylaid once Portamig and Butters got mentioned .
Yes, I do believe they are Chinese but are modified to make sure they're CE compliant?
There are a few on here with their tigs who rate them and their service but afaik, no one on here has one of their migs.

Thanks lads really think im off the idea of an r tech now any way!! That mig only has 200 amps and weldequip says i will need a 200+ mig for what im doing. So alittle more research needed

Still have not decided yet on which to buy. Portamig would be at the top of the wish list but just creeping out of my budget. Do not know if i want a sealey or a clarke, dont know enough about them, and i would rather buy new than second hand(unless i was sure). Think ill have to save a little harder for a little while, though that will not be easy as i have two weddings coming up in the next two weeks. Thanks for the advice guys I will let you know what i decide when i decide!!
