Quite a big drill

yeah its no longer in my possession, I donated it to the local industrial museum, as Asquiths are made in the local town...... and George Swift made drills locally too but are better know for lathes.

What always amazes me about these old machines is how the heck did they move them?
Long before the days of HIABs and forklifts. Lorries were a lot smaller in those days and yet the machines were bigger than the modern stuff.

They had huge cranes in Victorian days
Traction engines would do sterling service as would heavy horses.
I did have a picture from the turn of the century of a capstan lathe on the back of a horse drawn cart.
Biggest danger when transporting ra drills is the arm moving so I bolt eyes to the bedplate then choke with a ratchet strap or two.

Even now with big modern lifting and transport equipment it’s best to break down heavy and big equipment as it’s not always strong enough or the right shape for a safe lift

This is my friends belt drive Asquith, geared throughout so each power function taps off the central drive. The arm rises and falls on the column however the whole column is on a thrust bearing and swings out like that. It’s WW1, I must go back and get better pics. The key for aligning the column says fettling and finishing not our usual standard but ‘war finish’ by govt orders!

If you go to Beamish open air museum they had/ have the old ways.
Mostly the machines were built and tested at the e factory. Dismantled into smaller parts and moved with what they had.
There was a Averling and Porter traction engine that used to go to the Dorset steam show, with a crane attachment.

Or it was moved in one. There is great picture of the Titanic anchor being shifted by horses.
Lots of them.

Just because it was back then doesn't mean it was backward.

Well my big drill is pretty tiny compared to some of these - but it's a work of art and over 100 years old

There was one similar at the company I did my apprenticeship at. It had a brass plaque on the back saying that it was reconditioned in 1898! It was originally driven from an overhead shaft and converted to electric motor in the distant past.

It is.
One of the few places were you can find old style fire extinguishers.
But old style, but modern working parts.
