I'm talking about grinding a few mm off the welds, which usually takes a minute or two per weld. Is there a quieter way to do this than an angle grinder?
B+D powerfile - with quality 40 grit blue belts. A lot quieter - less scary to use and removes quite quickly. Mine gets loads of use. Feels cheap and nasty but just keeps on going. Yes, hire a decent welder that can do it properly first time
a bit better but all grinding is pretty offensive to the earI don't have a Powerfile - are they really that much better than the things I've listed?

+1 for the B&D...I often use it instead of a grinder as it's less noisy, less mess and a lot more controllable.B+D powerfile - with quality 40 grit blue belts. A lot quieter
I agree they are noisy anyway but the difference in noise between a flap disc and a grinding one are considerable.A lot of the noise from an angle grinder is the motor itself whining away so different abrasives won’t make much difference
