Quick tips for butt weld...5mm plate!

Hello all...

I am about to do a little test at college using a Mig welder the only problem is I am a stick welder...are there any tips that will help me butt weld two pieces of 5mmx50mmx150mm it doesn't have to be perfect just good enough to pass a small exam. 2mm penetration will be the main thing that means pass or fail...

Don't forget you should be going in the opposite direction!

With MIG cleanliness is next to Godliness. Get the edges 'clean enough to eat your dinner off them' and 2mm of penetration should be a doddle. Of course that assumes that you've set the machine up correctly and practiced enough to get the travel speed right as well.

as above and V the edges to about half thickness and leave a root gap, you don't say what welder spec you are using but I would suggest a 180amp approaching max with 1mm wire and about 8 to 10 lpm of gas would be about right

And push the torch forwards, unlike stick where you'd normally angle the rod the opposite way.
