If you are willing to home Load a .22 Hornet is a great choice, I got rid of my HMR and don't miss it one little biddy bit (not a fox gun and limited extra use on rabbits, with diminishing ammo quality of late). Hand loads work out about equal on cost to HMR at present (it was cheaper before the shortages)

I have to disagree, I used it very successfully on foxes and rabbits. the ranges I shoot over require any fox to be within 80yds, usually 60. calling them in to this distance is fairly easy as I normally have a hedgerow right behind me which makes it difficult for them to see me if I stay still, getting them into the shotgun is more difficult.

I see no immediate need for a CF rifle, the ammo is more expensive, I haven't got time to load my own and even if I did I probably wouldn't. for the moment I just want a cheap rifle that will do the job I want it to, a HMR fills both those requirements and myself and 4 others on my shoot have proved this over the last few years.

Just going on my own findings, terminal performance of HMR? "unpredictable" rather hit foxes with a 40 grn .22lr subsonic that was quiet and cheaper. If you don't and wont hand load I see your point though the Hornet is easy, safe and very cheap to reload and a great rabbit gun to boot! Using LilGun powder many just prime the case fill it with powder level off the to and seat the bullet pressure is 10,000 cu lower than spec and its around 2800 fps with a 45 grn bullet

Well, i was hoping the firearms team would be on the ball with this application, and to my surprise they are. Only sent the form Friday and have just had a call.from FEO asking why i have applied for rimfire over centre fire. Apparently they are trying to move people away from shooting foxes with rimfires and would prefer me to have something like a .223 or .22-250. Given my previous slot for .243 on my last certificate. This raises 2 issues for me.

firstly i haven't bought .223 ammo for a long time, and have never bought .22-250, and as such have no clue what todays prices are, so could anyone give me a ball park figure. Last time i bought .223 they worked out about 98p per round, but i wasn't shopping at the cheapest place in town so dunno if that was good or not.

he did say that they would happily grant me a slot for rimfire but it wouldn't include foxes. My last rimfire slot didn't either so in not really bothered about that, but now coming round to centre fire idea again

Wyn nice March, I have only the one now (second time sent back to Jap) having had 8 others.

What you have to be careful of is the Leups are Weaver so are many others that may not conform to a spec and may not fit other rails. If want a proper industry standard choose Picatinny or latest Stanag specified. Even Third Eye up Heckmondike don't specify but are Stanag which is a more controlled version of picatinny fairly sure they don't do QR but do strips of Stanag rail. I use their mounts dovetail and Stanag to cut and size rails cock on. thatswhere the other mounts show up by not fitting well or not at all.
Weaver pulls on the two 45 degrees pretty much however you clap up whether correct or not, picatinny pulls on the underside 45 degree pulling hard down on top flat with around 2mm clamping on the 45 degree bottom angle less than a proper cut dovetail.

Burris are more forgiving and come in adjustable moa.
Which leads me on to that March requiring around 18moa tilt but does have a fair elevation to compensate but far from ideal optical centre with that bolt on parallel rail.

I would argue the point that Picatinny offer almost no zero shift, same can be done with proper cut 60 degree dovetail I do it almost weekly.

22-250 or .223 will be similar price (its distribution costs of sec.5 ammo not powder content) Hornet comes in 25 rounds not 20 so its then a case of buy 20 get five free- yep still the same per box pretty much! I honestly only buy factory to test a new gun and establish a base line / harvest some brass as rolling your own allows you to keep very high quantities and produce exactly what you want, when you want it. Say 50 rounds of Hornet takes me about an hour and I can listen to the radio or hold a conversation while doing it. Kit costs are minimum with the Hornet as you really don't need a big press and even though I have such things for my bigger guns I do not use them on the little hornet case. I pay £14 per hundred for bullets and buy 500 a go and a 1 lb tub of powder gives me just shy of 700 loads!
The cops are correct, rimfires can kill foxes and far bigger things to boot but they are not the proper tool to use

right, i have now ammended my application for .17 and .223 Remington. The .17hmr is cheap enough locally Bout 12 quid per 50 for 17 grain ballistic tip and 13.50 a box for 20 grain hollow point. The .223 is about 20 quid for a box of 20.

oh, i would have though the powder would be the main concern. What is involved with gaining an explosives cert?

to begin with i will probably buy 2 boxes to get me.going. I'm not going to use massive amounts, even on a good week when in out every night i would be luck to get 5 shots off. There are now 4 od us with centre fire again so fox numbers are staying lower than they were. Still consistent though

Primers are explosives, powder is not. You don't need anything else than your FAC

I've had success using accushot 1 piece mounts swapping scopes on my hw97k. Normally goes back on with only 1-2 clicks needed.

Explosives certificate is for blackpowder, I think theres two bits of paper you need in fact. Smokeless powders are classed as a propellant not an explosive. Just need to show FAC to buy powder/primers, bullets and brass can be delivered by the postie. as I'm a cheapskate, it works very well. I use the powder measure to throw a slightly under weight charge and top it up with loose powder in the lid from a coffee cup with a small hole cut in it then when seating I partially seat the bullet then rotate the case a bit before fully seating. You will find that you will need to trim your cases pretty much after every firing as brass flows from the body of the case and ends up in the neck.

Got my visit for renewal on Monday, not shot so much over past few years so fingers crossed.

i will wait until i have the rifle but yeah if you fancy moving it all on i would be interested, was loki g at a press on ebay for £600! Bit more than i expected them to be. I know there are cheaper but this was bells and whisltes with case and bullet fees lol

does that anniversary kit come with the re-sizing die/de-primer and bullet seating die? or are they separate items?

It all came together as a complete kit with a loading manual. Theres two sizing dies, one full length one neck sizing only. They both decap as part of the sizing operation, theres a seating die as well. The only additional die you might need is a crimping die, depends whether you want to feed from a magazine or not. Pretty sure I picked one up from Kranks for about seven quid. A chap called Robert Frey set a 1000 yard benchrest record using Lee dies back in the 90's. That's good enough for me. Shop around a bit you might beat that price in the link I posted but everything seems to have gone up a lot since I bought any components.
