Quick question on Welding gauntlets for MMA

After getting burnt tonight, I need better then the red leather'ish gauntlets one buys for a few quid.

looked at Rhino weld ones but was really shocked at the spec as it only quotes 100 degree C
Aluminised back cow split leather welding gauntlet, suitable for protection against extreme heat. Heavy Duty 1.3mm cow split leather, aluminised kevlar back, wing thumb, fully welted construction, Kevlar stitched. Withstands 100 deg C. contact heat.


Now it is the stitching that keeps getting me as I tend not to notice when it starts to go. I had a molten lump of steel decide to enter the gloved hand at the side of second finger and run down to the nail.

Recommendations please and I will see what the welding supply shop has in tomorrow.

I wouldn't get hung up on the temperature they will withstand...90% of fab shops are full of blokes wearing 'red leatherish gauntlets' and they get on fine.

I've only ever used the aluminum backed ones once - welding 50mm plate for weeks on end - and they are horrible...sweaty, and stink when they get hot.

Just some decent standard welders gloves would be fine.

Rarely do you ever see those Alu backed ones in use. Have you ever put a pair on. They ain't great regarding mobility of your hands. They'll all burn if you get too close or hold the rod 3 inches from the arc. If you do want to get a decent pair I would add the esab curve glove is very nice but well overpriced particularly if your in the habit of burning them.

I hold the stinger in my right hand and hold my right hand with my left, generally. Recently whilst practising vert up I have been holding the rod near the arc, well a few inches away so I do tend to scorch them and I think this is the issues as the stitching is going.

I know it is a bad habit to have I should make up a positioner of something to rest on, but it is just more that gets in the way.

I will try and visit the shop tomorrow and see what gloves they have. Just some of the red ones are very stiff, stitched wrong, can't bend fingers etc. So
rather then £4 I will spend more if they are more comfortable and better made.

Ask your guys if they've got any comfoflex weldas gloves (blue ones)
I've never had a nicer pair of gloves and they only cost me about £8.

Comfy, good flexibility and keep the heat away.

Ive got Blue gloves not sure of the make but they dont last long but cheap enough to buy a few pairs at a time

Iv found ya can't go by whether there red or blue different makers suppliers have different quality red ones try diff supplier see wat they have we've had loads a different ones and colour never gave a guide to quality of them had red good and bad blue good and bad

Change them out quicker. Once I get a pair scorched they go in a pile of "ok for moving warm and sharp stuff"

If the sticking is going they are well past serviceable

I do exactly the same thing but the only problem is that pile consists of more lefts than rights lol.

Once mine get hard or scorched they get moved to the house where I use them for loading coal into the boiler.

my gloves are lasting about 3 weeks, before ruined, would think there may be something to soak them in to get back to a pliable glove, but never mind.

So visit to the shop and trying out a couple of sets of gloves ESAB Curved, more a MIG glove really to my mind, but the sticking looks a lot better then the economy red's and a pair or RHINO gloves leather 4mm foam the a liner, so will see how they last.

I will just as likely burn these to bits in 3 weeks as well.

I wear the Miller heavy duty blue ones with the silicone patches over the backs and fingers, lovely supple glove, comfy, and they last a fair while. I'm not easy on gloves and these are the longest lasting I've ever had.

Only downside is that unless @langy can get them, you have to buy them from the us
