Quick-fit regulators

Hi, when using the regulator for disposable gas bottles I found that when you pushed the pipe into the quick-fit outlet there was a lot of trial and error involved in getting so as it wouldn't hiss when the regulator was open. In the end I phoned the company and they sent me some new pipe of slightly larger diameter, which was slightly better but not perfect. Is it all down to wiggling it until it works or is there some knack to it? Or even is there something wrong with the equipment?

The only time I had trouble like that the end of the small bore pipe had got a bit mashed up so I just cut 1/4" of the end. Also found that once the pipe was pushed into the regulator I had to get my fingernails behind that little ring thingy on the end of where the pipe fits and pull it out as far as it would go (only 'bout 1/2 mm) to lock the pipe into the regulator properly or it did hiss a little.

It's because those little regulators are cheap! I have a proper twin guage big bottle regulator and so had to convert the output to the small pipe for my welder, I used a 6mm to 4mm push fit reducer like this and have it pushed into a rubber hose from the reg, the 4mm pipe from the welder is regularly inserted and removed and it never leaks or needs reseating. My old disposable reg though, that needed about 4 attempts to stop it leaking every time.
