Question re cutting discs

Hi guys I have a welding job to do on my Landover chassis with a fair bit of cutting involved it between 2 and 3mm think,

I have only ever really used the thicker grinding discs in my angle grinder 4.5in, and need to get some cutting discs, so are all discs for cutting steel made from the normal grid base stuff or are the steel discs to cut steel, I dont want to spend a bomb on discs but are the dearer ones better in that they last longer or should I just buy the cheapest, any recommendations as which I need for my chassis.

I'd reccomend the thinner ones as well, a cleaner and quicker cut than the thicker versions. Just avoid anything with the 'Silverline' label, they just vanish in a few seconds, rubbish.
Also make sure that you are using them square to the metal and not trying to put a bend in them, this will make them disappear in no time, and never use them for grinding, they go 'POW' and disappear.

definitely use the thin disks. They're made of the same material, just thinner. they cut quicker and waste less metal.

I've been trialing some Smith & Arrow 1mm discs and they're good.

Just had a look at S&A discs good price but £10.50 pp is the killer and only in boxes of 25, that would come to over £26.00, I would not use that many in years, what are the Machine Mart one like at £1.14 each 1mm thick.

Hello,
I have found the 1mm thick cutting discs to be excellent, However the more expensive ones cut better and last longer and you dont get showered with disintergrating disc grit. I bought quite a few from Aldi(about £3-99) for 15 discs but they are nowhere near as fast cutting or long lasting as some bought from B.O.C.
Yer pays Yer money and takes your choice.

Think I'm on BOC ones at the moment too.

1mm or lower is like cutting through butter if you are used to the old fashioned 3mm discs.

In answer to the original post I'm not aware of any steel blade types of disc - probably because of safety for a hand held device (who hasn't had them tangled up in their clothing). Half reasonable 1mm discs would be the way forward. They are grit based but because they are thin and cut quickly they last reasonably well.

I assume by steel discs you mean these or similar, they are for cutting masonry, definitely not to be used on steel, Send Smith and arrow an email enquiry, and mention the forum, you'll get 30% discount, I'm waiting for an order to arrive from them, carriage i think was £8

Hi,

I just noticed this evening that I'm down to my last couple of thin disks, and I could do with some more flap-disks too.

I bought the last lot of flap-disks off Ebay from Duffield Abarasives and as I recall the auction included ten free cutting disks.

I don't remember the price but it wouldn't have been much, and I'm sure it wouldn't have been anywhere near a pound a disk!
