question MIG vs ARC

hello


im new to the whole welding experience and i have a question.

i am in the mist of building a subframe that will bolt up to a chassis that i have and that will allow me to drop in a motor with different motor mounts. basically what i am building is a frame that will cradle the engine while its bolted to the chassis

my questions is, what would be a superior to use for this job, a MIG welder or an ARC welder? i am using 1 1/4" mild steel and i have the MIG welder in house already. im only asking is because a few of my buddies were telling me i should be using ARC and some are telling me i need MIG. so i figured id ask on here to help me out.

!.25 inch solid section? ARC might well be the thing for that. But if it is a hollow section with maybe 2mm wall thickness then MIG would be the thing. Would be daft to use solid section on a car so I'd go for the hollow section and use MIG.

No reason not to use mig on that, it's quick and easy.
Arc has it's place but for thin wall section like you'll be using mig will be plenty good enough.

What power is the mig welder you have access to?
I would reckon at least 150amps would be needed for this kind of work.
A welder without the power can make convincing looking welds that are not structurally sound.
What motor are you putting into what? I fined these projects quite interesting. have a look at this thread http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=24022 putting a monster motor into an innocous east european rust bucket.

i have a 220 mig welder and i am building a 2jz-gte 93 rx7 heres a pic of my first build

so in conclusion, i should be ok with my 220 mig to get the job done right, i can sleep now lol

of course!! i took the car apart since the picture, im going from 500hp up to 800hp, custom fuel system, new turbo, new polished parts, new interior, custom fab. work. ect ect, the car went from mild to CRAZY hahahaha i'll post plenty of pics as soon as the car is starting to come together

nice engine choice, best to steer clear of mazda nissan dirt ect we need more pics lol im a great fan of arc welding myself but unless its a 3 phase arc welder i wouldnt touch it (this has been my humble expierence and im sure most will not agree with me) or at least a good quality arc depends on how good a welder you are realy, tig would be my first choice but thats a whole different story

what do u guys recommend... .035 or .045 wire for this job?

Both would do, but I would go for the .035 if I had the choice.

any benefits of using .035? is it stronger?

No, the same strength. I thought the .035 might be easier to use on the thickness you will be using. Less chance of blowing through, but there isn't much in it. As I say both would do fine. If I had .045 already that's what I'd use.
