Question for the 'computer geeks' - FLV converter

Hi Guys - can anyone tell me how to view an flv. file in windows media player. I have tried/downloaded 'googled recomendations' but got fed up of them adding in 'extras' that i didnt want AND then for windows media player not to recognise the fie. I have downloaded the flv file via 'ant.com' with what i thought was the codec from them but nothing. Thanks in advance - Mark

There's a program called Applian FLV player which is more successful at playing FLVs than Media Player is.

Or you could try converting it to another format with Any Video Converter

VLC Media Player is the one I used last time I wanted to look at one. I wasn't aware that .flv files could be played on windows media player.

I use VLC media player as well, It seems to play just about anything you can throw at it, and free as well.

If you want it to specifically play in Windows media player you need a codec. Try free codecs.com playflv.

Thanks guy's, i think there is enough to go at from the replies, however i wont be able to post which one i went with until tomorrow as the reason i lost the ability to play flv.'s (and couldnt remember what i had installed on my system to previously view flv's) was a trashed hard disk, so i am busy scurrying away and trying to get all my previous programmes etc installed - Thanks in the meantime - Mark

VLC media player is the one to use-free-plays almost anything-no spyware-compact program easy on memory
Dump Windows Media player too many privacy issues and DRM (digital Right management)
issues

In the end i grabbed a couple of minutes of free time and went with TIG pauls suggestion of VLC (and later confirmed by stucktoweld). Seems a decent piece of software so 'hunt' is over. Thanks guys - Mark

Dragging this up - I've found a free media player called Qvod - plays my FLVs OK and is nowhere as geeky as VLC

If you want to convert anything (audio or video) to anything else, use Format Factory, it's the bomb
