Quality of machines?!

Hi everyone,
well my question is kinda easy if you have some experience/knowledge with welding machinery, but since I don't I need your, lovely people, help

The thing is I kinda have to put these machines in quality order from 1 to 10 (10 being highest)
Lorch (DE), Merkle (DE), Cloos (DE), Rehm (DE), Stahlwerk (DE), Migatronic (DK) ...so mb you could help?!

is this something to do with a college course by any chance? I can remember having to do this with cars such as RR, Austin, ford etc and in the end the answer was they were all good quality as they all did what you wanted them to (my tutors idea of a laugh)

well yeah I need it for university. And when I tried to explain that they all are kinda high quality products, they looked at me unsatisfied and asking for more detailed info...

Ask yourself, what answer do they want you to come back with? Are they hot on any of the particular brands? Or are they particularly patriotic? (In which case, Migatronic should be 10, and the rest rated as 1).

doesn't sound very honest more like pleasing someone with lies, but thx for the answer
I don't ask for advise how to write my project I just wanted other ppl insight on those machines but thx... will use it if nothing comes up..

Everybody will give an honest opinion of the machine they own or have owned. But your results will be swayed by the people who've had troublesome machines.

On the other hand, you're faced with giving an opinion on machines without any actual experience (I assume) so you'd just be picking names out of a hat anyway...

Maybe make yourself a chart of sorts and go through each machine in turn.Giving each a score, For thing like reliability,duty cycle,minimum and maximum amps,type of roller feed.length of warranty,manufacturers customer service etc.See which you think comes out best.

If you subscribe to the Crosby doctrine of quality equals fitness for purpose this type of question is impossible to answer. For example, a machine that is very reliable, easy to use, produces great looking welds but has a low duty cycle would impress the occasional DIY user as "high quality", but the professional user would want it to weld all day. The low duty cycle won't allow that so it isn't fit for this particular purpose.

First you have to define quality and there are all sorts of facets to that, and it's all tempered by price and intended use. RR vs the Austin 7 as said above. I know a little about oscilloscopes and you could define quality as performance and support plus cost of ownership. HP and Tektronix were trying to outdo each other and producing scopes with specially matched components and custom chips. At the top end it was all decidedly twitchy.

If you were were in a position where you needed to buy a scope costing as much as the average house and were prepared to entertain the follow up charges to keep it working, say working on leading edge radar development with the government paying, you'd invite them both in and run a beauty contest. I you were buying a scope for a technical college or TV service department, you wouldn't look at either, because even if they gave you one, it wouldn't be much use for what you were about; far too hard use with features that were past irrelevant and downright confusing. HP and Tektronix were trying to lure people into buying instruments beyond any possible justification based on cost.

I suggest the university wants evidence you've thought about the question and understand what the ranges these makers present offer, and how you'd prioritise these to make a list, say if you were buying welding machines for a factory. Then for the purpose of answering the question you'd have to define what the factory was doing and how varied the work was and so on. There's no single right answer to this.

The other thing with equipment of this sort is how the various companies support their products, are seen to support their products, and how they deal with equipment they no longer make. A lot of this stuff was fine 15 years ago when it was bought, the customers are not sufficiently persuaded by the salesman that it's all impossibly old fashioned and they should buy new, because it does what they want. When it stops working they want it fixed at a reasonable price and they don't expect the maker to have forgotten about it as soon as it dropped off the price list.

I'd be inclined to contact the companies and ask for reference customers, then contact the customers and try to find out why the buying decisions were made. Don't expect anything very coherent to come from this, but I think you could construct a plausible story about evaluating these things, how they might be evaluated on various rational bases and so construct a list.
