I went into a well known wrought iron suppliers the other day and noticed these railings in the corner of the factory.

Im guessing they are returns from an unhappy customer

I just wonder how its even possible for those snotters to be missed time and again through the galv and p.c. process, then pass as fit for sale, the mind boggles

Allot of my stuff comes back from galvanisers like that, scrolls and those heads seem to be the worst, ten minutes with a file soon has it looking good again, they are really sharp and spikey so n o excuse for sending out like that to customer.

A decent powder coater would have prepped them properly. But the stuff that goes through the production shop is cheap and poorly done and that's the result. Bet they weren't even blasted prior to coating.

I hate powder coat on Gates and rails and don't know any of the best who do it. Galv issues like those spikes is par for the course to check and correct what gets me is the very real drop in quality now the old smaller Galvanisers have finished trading.

This last week I was told a numbers of parts had to be drilled by a third party firm and the guys on the floor at the galvanisers, I knew full well it didn't but the guys on the shop floor don't seem to have the know how or ability to think now. I had to call one of the bosses who seemed surprised that his staff didn't know how and more so that a fabricator knew how to avoid it.

The issue shown in the pics should be a disciplinary IMO if its not a training and procedures one

Im currently having trouble with powder coating over galv at the moment as it happens.

Once ive picked up from the galvanisers, I take the job back to the shop, file any spikes off like the ones in the photo, then carefully go over it with a flapdisc where needed. Then drop off at the powder coating shop.

The issues im having are excessive pin pricks like little burst bubbles all over the job, im not expecting a showroom finish but I had to knock back the last job because it had hundreds of these little bubbles and was rough to the touch- not good on a handrail.

They sanded it down and re did them, but I know il get the same issue again on another job soon enough.

I asked if they do the 'de-gassing' of galvanised jobs and the boss said yes they did. He kind of suggested that it was 'bad galv' but there was nothing wrong with the galv, in fact it was a particularly good finish, requiring hardly any touching up.

Its a lottery wether the job will coat okay from one to the next.

Red oxide primer should solve the problem if the budget allows. Are they blasting after out gassing?
