Quad copter recommendations

I used to race kite buggies. If I was still doing it then a camera platform would be excellent for capturing the action and would see a lot of use but would be more likely to grab a racing quad for a 15 minute brap over the field.

I am just a big kid who likes boy and man toys. If i involve my son, the mrs wont give me grief for more boy toys.

11 year old getd bored quickly. Quad bikes, dirt bikes, power kites, are all an acceptable fun buzz that i suspect will last longer than a broken quad copter after the first oh sh1t its too windy today.

A quad kitted out for filming would be excellent for filming this. Best Aerial shots I could get were by hanging the camera from the kites.

Its kitted out for racing so noise wasn't a consideration I suppose. Camera platforms arent flown as aggressively so should be a bit quieter.

i have the dji phantom standard, great bit of kit, 27k video and the built in gimble keeps it as smooth as silk. all the features you could want.

...Looks like the majority of them are 3 hours' charge for 15 minutes of fun - I know I can buy more batteries but you certainly don't get a lot of time for your investment in charging....

When I used to do indoor car racing we had fast chargers for the NiCad packs which would recharge in less than 30 mins although they had to sit on a fan while charging to cool them down.

Not so much of an issue on the ground these days. With the high mah bats available but weight will always be an issue in the air. With some weight savings , good batteries with a high c rating and a sensible trade off between mah and weight and sensible flying no reason flight times couldn't be increased to mid to high 20s. I was heading out with two batteries, getting 15 mins out of each and ending up with plenty left in reserve( faster charge and better battery longevity by not caining them.). I'll probably grab another pair giving me over an hours flight each session. More than enough when concentrating on flying an angry wasp the size of a side plate near 100 meters away

Some batteries have higher charge ratings which decrease charge times a lot too.
Current batteries are 3s 1500mah for reference.
Note. Lipos require care and need to be stored at about 3.7-3.8v and fully charged on the day.

I'd go for an off-road type battery powered car as they can be used in more places than a quad copter.

I've had battery & petrol powered RC cars, the petrol ones might be faster and you can play for longer but the battery ones are a lot less hassle plus you can play in more places since they are quiet, personally I'd go battery if I were to do it again.

I would second that, batteries are a lot better now as well plus brushless motors.
Unless you enjoy the getting of nitro ones. I think I've spent probably 2 to 3 times more tim3 working on them than actually running them.
But they are good fun.
