'puter question ?

On my desktop there is a small, curved, blue, arrow in the bottom left corner of each icon, anyone know what that is ? win7 OS.

It signifies a shortcut to a program or folder &c, rather than the program itself. Right click and select "properties" for details.

You can delete the shortcut but it wont delete the program. You have to go through 'control panel' to do that.

When you try to delete a shortcut in Win7 it gives you a link to the program list so you can uninstall the program.

Windows 7? I found a couple of old laptops in the loft the other day whilst searching for long-lost computer files. One wouldn't boot propoerly so I lost my patience, took the hard drive out and binned it... it ran Win98.

The other (still working) runs Win95 - to be precise, it will only run smoothly, the ORIGINAL release of Win95! It has a storming 133MHz processer and 16Mb of RAM. Bizarrely, it also has one of the best displays I ever saw on a laptop until only the last 3 or 4 years - and instead of one of those godawful touchpad things, it has a tiny embedded joystick in the middle of the keys. I always found it much nicer to use than a pad, so much so that if I use Nursy's laptop, I plug in a mouse!

Should have loaded a small version of Linux and had two laptops.

As long as it had a CD drive you would be quids in.

Bet they were a weight mind. ?How did you get them into the loft in the first place?

Sounds like my Toshiba Satellite. I've got XP on it and very little else.

There is a PS2 connector on the back and I have a splittter cable to connect a keyboard and mouse. I also use a 17" monitor on it.

If you want a really heavy laptop get yourself an Osborne, 640K RAM, twin 360K floppy, 7" screen - bulletproof.

You can get rid of the little arrow if you like to mess around, type remove shortcut arrow in google and a few methods come up, registry edits and programs to do it automatically.

I use TweakUI to remove the shortcut arrows from icons in XP, don't know if there's a newer version for Win 7.

If you want a really heavy laptop get yourself an Osborne, 640K RAM, twin 360K floppy, 7" screen - bulletproof.

Way back in the early days of our company, the boss had a Sharp (?) 'portable' computer... about the size of a microwave oven but not as deep; the keyboard (on a coiled cable) clipped to the front to protect the screen in transit. Not sure but the screen may have been a CRT!
