Hi I have aquired some aluminium front forks. I would like to shorten them by three inches for a project. Is it possible to TIG weld them and not compromise the strength
Cheers
Hi. Thanks for all your input. Brilliant response from all. And yes it's for me . I know of a sh#t hot TIG welder in in my neck of the woods. Will be considering my next move.Ive been asked to repair cracked aluminium forks and frames several times. As above, so many variables its just too risky IMHO, so I just pass.
If its for yourself, then just get the hacksaw out get modding.............what's the worse than can happen
That’s the only way I’d consider doing it, a sleeve to not only add strength but to take some heat whilst weldingHave a pic of what your trying to do? Im assuming its to get a result that cant be bought off the shelf.
If its hard forks rather than suspension, you can probably keep all of the strength by welding a sleeve inside.
Get hold of some scrap pairs and do some destructive testing.
