Push or Pull?

Push is far nicer but yes, pull does give slightly more pen.

Interesting. I'd always assumed the opposite. I thought pushing would be moving towards the heat so penetration would be better. I know that is not a terribly technical description but hopefully it makes sense! Anyway, care to set me right?!

I did a couple of coupons a while back and with all parameters identical, push gave a flatter, wider profile and pull gave a taller, narrower profile but the difference in penetration could clearly be seen.
The root on the pull one was definitely more pointed and slightly deeper.
I'll do some more when I get a chance and post some pics.

Push for bare wire, pull for flux (so the rule works for mig, stick, fcaw). Everyone knows that, surely, even people from Blackpool?

down hand will be pull on most frames i makes as its 3mm thick, bigger stuff uphill push, plate etc push
stick pull on flat, but uphill would be push. wouldnt it?

As already said - push for MIG and pull for stick. Change around sometimes if access is a problem etc. Oh, and I 'push' O/A.

Generally, I would 'push' with MIG/MAG, but, as has already been said 'pull' gives you better penetration, is necessary when welding down hill, and is especially useful for opening 'keyholes' and getting 100% penetration when butt welding preped plates.

So I guess it just depends on the job......

Though sometimes with the ali mig i neither push nor pull.. sort of perpendicular i guess.
As said, where space is tight, what-ever works!

You had to decide push or pull and there was no "push and pull depending on...". Now that I have enough amps it's push most of the time, with my wimpy first welder there was a lot of pull.
