Purging tape

A friend of mine welds stainless turbo manifolds and ali intake manifold, Don't think he's using back purge for the ali, but when I have been to his garage and he is welding SS he uses tin foil.. folded 3 times and wrapped around the end with steel wire to hold it in place. just wraps the tin foil over the pipe or whatever and wraps the steel wire around and twists it tight. works like a charm by the looks of his welds both inside and out.

Never got round talking to the power coaters.

So what are people using, I'm goung to try wiring tin foil for toob. But I will still require tape for other stuff.

Not sure whether it would be any good for this application but when I was a sparky at Pilkington glass we used to use fibreglass insulation tape to wrap busbar joints that were subjected to high temperatures. I don't think it was overly expensive and stood up to high temperatures really well.

I ordered some PET tape off ebay, but still havnt used it. I did get it for masking when powder coating though, seems that you can get it for different temperature ranges on ebay though. I ended up buying a couple of rolls from the far east

Work in some situations but picture a butt weld with root gap... tape it up to keep the purge from escaping and remove as the weld progresses so it can't be overlapped and stuck to itself

Use the 3m masking tape for low bake ovens
You could use kapton or polyester
As well but welders been using masking tape for years

PET it is then, I had suggested it to @hotrodder 8yrs ago, and come to think about it, I did try powder coating tape on a petrol tank that had been freshly painted before he found out it didnt fit. I tried using it as protection, sure it burnt but I was very close

I hate masking tape; it either doesn't want to stick, or does and then comes for in 2mm bits, leaving glue that's a bain to remove. Oh and did I say I dont like it.

Looks like polyamide (Kapton) has the edge in max temp. However PET looks to be stronger, cant see it getting reused, so I'll go for Kapton and see how it fairs.

I made this up. if it's a butt weld I just clamp / wedge this to the underside.
