Had a TIG now for the best part of 7 years and always put off using it for small jobs as I never produce a pleasant weld. Ive been using MIG for 35years plus and enjoy every minute of it and just dont have problems but as for TIG.....
So, today I was welding a classic motorcycle frame in mild steel and MIG-ed it up to a point of where I couldnt get a weld in on the back of summat with a MIG as it would have left it too proud so I reluctantly dragged the TIG out. Being Lazy and unenthusiastic I used the same set up from my last job of Aluminium and left the same tungsten althought shapened it which incidently was a white tipped one for alloy, I just set it to DC and knew it was going to be cremated and a horrible grey and didnt care less, but..... it wasn't at all!
The weld was absolutely perfect and I realised I must have always had the wrong tungsten for my 'steel' jobs. I even went over a weld on a recent 'orrible' grey stainless job I tried to weld and cooked and that started to look shiney and actually a colourful weld. It must have been one of those 'light bulb' moments in life. I'm happy and just wanted to share this......... Eric
