hi all. ive been using alushield universal for mig and tig welding ally for a while now, also using argoshield universal for mig welding steel. i was chatting to a mate yesterday who uses pureshield for migging ally and steel. he says he gets cleaner welds on the ally with this gas. do you agree? also he uses a pulse mig for the ally but i just use a normal clarke 450. it would be better for me to use just the one gas if possible. any of your expert advice would be greatly appreciated. cheers! ps. great website!!!

I get fed up with these tradenames. Puresheild is pure Argon. It'll be fine for almost all TIG and MIGing of aluminium. Even BOC don't recommend it for steel, but it can be used (problems include big dropplets, more spatter, standy-up welds). I'd guess it'll depend on the method of transfer, too.

We use Alumaxx for pulse welding ally, but pure Argon is perfectly acceptable.
You can sometimes (non critical) get away with using pure argon on steel, but its far from ideal, and if you want to do any quality work a Argon c02 mix is the way to go, unfortunatly, thats no use for the ally.

yeah cheers for that. il stick to the gas im using for the steel but im going to try the pureshiel... sorry argon! for the ally. id like a pulse mig as they weld cooler but trying to get my boss to open his wallet is like trying to weld cheese! the problem im trying to sort out on the ally is distortion, welding brackets on one side of 2.5mm panels but i could do without the ripples that appear on the other side. i sand them out but it all takes time. i totally agree with what you say about the universal gas hitch, it would make life much easier for me! just for the record, im not new to this, im a supervisor with 25 years experience.
