Oldest was looking for new work boots. Found an online dealer in Germany. Price plus postage was cheaper than anyone in the UK. Order was placed and accepted. Boots arrived today, local parcel delivery company brought them and a bill for delivery! Son had paid for delivery. Delivery driver said it is happening all the time now. We’ve been and checked the website, no mention of extra costs anywhere. Extra delivery was £44

Postage was all paid for at the ordering stage too. I tried to order turbos for the RR from Germany, company refused. Hassle was to much for them

It could be to do with import duty and vat, some of the charges by different shipping methods are listed on

we get it early because of brexit but I believe the vat rules are changing between eu countries as well so a german buying from france will also have vat applied

I sell on Etsy and they sent me an email the other day which I’ve not read properly but the gist of it was that there’s vat payable between everywhere now and they will collect it for me and forward it to the appropriate places so I don’t have to register everywhere

there is a big chart with rates for various thing in different countries and things that are now prohibited. Some of it is proper random. It’s a Euro thing not a Brex it thing as far as I can make out.

definitely seem hit or miss, had a bit coming from uk, most times no customs charge, sometimes aye.... can't really figure out the logic.....

got humped on linisher belts I ordered before Brexshit, but because they shipped after the new year, I had to pay the duty, so the good deal wasn't..............

I ordered £75 of stuff off Chronos, £25 delivery, no vat was levied on the sale.
then DHL, inform me during shipping there's a 39 Euro customs fee.

The joys of the UK leaving that thingymajig.....

just to say, if any forum member is stuck, and needs parts from Europe and suppliers won't ship to uk, I can assist as an intermediary. The advantage of having a company is I have all the necessary VAT and export details.

I did the very same for a member recently, German company had stopped shipping to the UK.

Gave two nice ladies near nervous breakdowns, trying to fill in paperwork on computers.

Don't get me started on what happened....

So many Brits moving back and selling stuff, as they're obliged / want to downsize.

Actually, a lot of the problems are to do with VAT chages that HMRC coincidentally brought in on 1st Jan, not the dreaded 'B' word. They dispensed with the exemption for items under a certain price, and made suppliers outside the UK liable for collecting VAT on behalf of UK Gov. Obviously 'B' also means now that anything over a certain value has Customs Duty applied as well as VAT.

The EU is also making some changes to VAT later in the year which will have a similar impact on items bought from outside the Customs Union, including from the UK, but they won't effect customers inside the EU when they're buying from other EU countries.

Someone ( @fizzy ?) explained sending from UK to EU since Jan 1st is a nightmare due to the new "Importing in EU" documents that are needed, and various customs charges & import taxes.

Importing from EU into UK *should* require similar documents but it sounds like UK have never set a date to apply the new rules so buying from EU shouldn't be much different to last year. A lot of EU suppliers know the UK borders can cause problems so are sensibly just refusing to ship here. I'm not sure about the duties and handling fees, they were unpredictable in the past, I'm sure they're even worse this year

Buying from Germany is now like buying from everywhere else abroad -

You get charged vat on import. Along with a significant (on small value goods) clearence fee. Generally GBP 15-20 ish.

Oh. And then you get charged vat on the clearence fee. And vat on the delivery cost. And even vat on the duty, if there is any of that payable.

Business to consumer trade with the EU is stuffed. Business to business, unless youre in a group that has got decimated, like shellfish, is moderately ok (as in feasible, just more costly), but business to consumer is a mess.

My main resin supplier no longer ships here because we're not worth the hassle, now I have to get an intermediary to do it, pita. And don't get me started on having to sort customs forms for sending to NI every time...
