pulley rope

I have an old double pulley in steel. The rope size is stamped on the pulley as 2 and quarter inch.

Was it common to stamp rope sizes in circumference? I am suspecting this is the case rather than diameter.

Yes, absolutely. As far as I recall all our ropes were specified in circumference.

so probably 18mm diam,(23/32") 21/4" circumference. Had them on the Gin wheel on building sites.
