pull cords

the pull cord on the lawn mower snapped on me, and i said i would replace it. i knew of the dirty spring in them its like a piece of 3mm plate wound in a coil. i knew it would go boing, it went boing, can these be compressed and put back in ?

yes you have to rewindthem in your hand and refit it

however why anyone removes the pulley and spring is beyond me you dont have to

Yes...sometimes it's easier to take the spring out alltogether...wind it back up by hand and then refit it.
It can be a bit of trial and error to make sure you have wound it back enough to pull the cord all the way back in.

ON this engine u do how else could you fit a new cord

just for future reference

anyone wanting to replace a pull cord

remove the pull cord unit from the engine usually 4 bolts

thats the end of your dismantling

remove the old cord

you will notice a notch on the pulley insert your new cord into the pulley then pass up through the notch
now turn the pulley in the right direction so as to tension the spring with the cord still in the notch once tensioned put the cord through the casing and fit pull handle job done

if you find there is not enough tension just pull some slack upwards into the notch again and add more tension by turning pulley again

almost everyone takes the bolt out of the pulley then boing spring everywhere

did one for someone a couple of weeks ago he did same as you and couldnt get it back together but was gobsmaked when i showed him how simple it was
