Public Liability for marine/inland waterway

Hi,

First post but I have been reading the forum for a while and found it a great source of information.

I am setting up providing on-site welding and fabrication after leaving the Forces earlier this month. Apart for my experience and qualifications I have gained in the Forces I have worked on canal boats, agricultural machinery, vehicle restoration and general fabrication and these are the areas I will be working in moving forward.

I have been getting quotes for public/product liability though the suggestions of brokers in the other public liabilities threads but so far they have all been unable to quote when I ask for cover. All seems to be fine until I mention docks/harbours, marine/inland waterways.

I'm hoping someone who does similar work can give me a steer?

Having a chat with a local marina or boatyard owner might yield some useful information. They're mostly a friendly bunch.

Also, might be worth getting in touch with the Canal & River Trust.

I have worked for a boatyard under their insurance previously and on CRT boats, I'll give them a call and see what comes up.

Second for GJW, I had my last company insured through their marine trade policy about 6 years ago, beware that any hot works, welding, hot torches, blowlamps etc will increase insurance costs.
Fibreglass laminating will also shove the cost up.
Iirc correctly i was paying about £1400 a year for what was basically third party only & buildings insurance on one concrete prefab shed with no hot works at all.
But they were the only people who would touch it at all so i had no choice.

A broker is always the best bet.
When they ask how much hot works you do, make sure it's less than 10%. It probably is if you add it up
