3D printing has been in use for prototype pattern making at least since early 90's.Hand making of models will still be asked for while accurate 3D is missing or cost more to produce than a hand made model.

Its a noble craft

I was watching that techy programme "click" on bbc last night, some brightsparks have come up with a machine that can lay blocks on building sites. No team of brickys with levels and trowels soon, just a huge machine with an arm that sits there and lays blocks to the plans which it has in its computer.

Also, does it have a fake hairy **** covered by an ill fitting pair of trousers? Makes you wonder where the powers that be think there'll be any jobs left for anyone in the future though, if this obsession with automation continues.

We'll be obsolete, literally, or very low skilled/low paid machine tenders. The amount of trades and professions that are set to disappear in the coming decades due to automation, is sobering.

I've spent the last few weeks working at the national composites centre in Bristol. They have some technology that can carve a mould out of foam to facilitate wooden boat building. Early indications suggest that it can save at least 4 months and won't require a carpenter to fashion a mould the the fibre glass can be laminated onto. Awesome technology but pants for the carpenter

Reminds me of a story my chemistry teacher once told us, a bridge (I can't remember which, I might not even be real) takes a year to paint and needs repainting every year so the workers start at one end, paint the whole thing, then start over. Then a new paint was invented that lasts 25 years, meaning the painters were out of a job. I forgot where I was going with this.

Probably the Forth Road Bridge. It was when I was at school.

The Forth Road Bridge has just been named a UNESC World Heritage Site.

No computer involvement?

Yeah right, step files is all you need to know on that

They will have CNC's based on that or they put that work out hence them not showing it.

I will be pretty sure they have a digitiser or access to one as well.

Anyway Pattern making has been using CNC for decades, nothing wrong with it and the whole process of making patterns still requires plenty of hands on skilled workers
