Propane torch blowback

I found a propane bottle in one of the sheds (left by previous owner) with the sort of wide nozzle on it that roofers use for tar work on felt roofs. The bottle seems half full and has a regulator on it with a tap and a pressure adjuster. It has been fine for annealing sheet ali for a while but has just stated to blowback and singe my arm hair. There doesn't seem to be an obvious site detailing the correct procedure for setting one of these up. Any suggestions? Burner head looks a bit like this.

Nah. Does it occasionally straight from cold. I open the main tap a good amount and the pressure adjuster dial hasn't been altered. Do they block the nozzles up? The main jet looks as if it fires through a hole to draw air through. Could it be that the gas is being fired off-centre by some debris? Not keen on sticking my head close enough to it to see!

take the torch head off and clear the jet...Bullfinch is not the best torch at the end of the day as i have about 5 on a shelf. Seivert all day for me for my roofing torches. Iff you pay the postage i will send you a torch for free matey as i have a rook of em and all makes

dont forget to always keep the bottle upright too...very important that with propane

Sievert for me too, they are quality items with a great selection of nozzles, from a pencil flame, up to a flame that would lift a hot air balloon (almost)

of course being the geek i am ive just bought new heads from the titainium range...check them out as they burn hotter too.

Aha! Just pulled the head apart and there were quite a few flakes under the brass gauze before the jet. Tapped it and some crud fell out. Seems to be working again. I assume that having it set to just 3psi is alright? That is where it was set previously.

i always take the gauzes out as there more trouble than there worth...dont you mean 3 bar on the pressure? as 3 psi is a knats breath

Nope. The dial says psi. Hmmmm.

The only ref I can find on the interweb says "up to 50psi". It seems to work alright and I'm only annealing 1.2mm ali sheet at the fold lines so it doesn't need a big burn.
