Propane/acetylene

Can you use an acetylene regulator/hose and cutting torch for propane?
Been a while since I’ve bought any,

Torch yes, but the tips are different. The OA ones are a one piece tip, the Propane ones are a inner and an outer. Depends on your torch, but mine (Saffire) will take both as long as the outers are the same.

Hose - Gas doesnt care what its in so yes but the ends are different if you've got swaged on ones. You arent supposed to put the wrong gas in the wrong colour either - Acetelyne is Red and Propane is Orange (?) The tool factors I use has started selling blue / green twin so not sure what thats for. Some new coding I'd think.

Reg - Again, I'm fairly positive the bottles have different threads to stop you mixing it up by accident so probably not.

Someone may be along to correct me soon, but this is what I've come across in the years I've been working.

Is that to do with the gas eating it or the ends being different? Ignoring the obvious and the fact in a work situation the correct colouring is important!

Would you know what the blue / green I was on about is please?

Apart from the colouring for identification the different gases have different properties.

I could look it up as I don’t know from memory, but it’s 9 pm on Saturday and I’m chilling with a few beers

Something rings a bell with the wrong gas rotting the hose, not sure which way round it is though.

The correct hose is so cheap compared to the cost of something going wrong, no reason not to have the right one.

Fair enough! Its way past guiness o'clock here too Now I've said it I'm sure theres a rotting thing. My gut feeling is its the propane, think I read about it when I was researching the campervan conversion. I've only cut with propane a couple of times. OA is standard kit everywhere I've worked, on land and on ships. Its a much cleaner cut and more importantly its lighter than air so it doesnt collect in bilges and nooks and crannies. Acetelyne not oxygen that is......

I vaguely recall hearing you can't (Or shouldn't ) use propane hoses with acetylene but acetylene hoses are fine for propane gas. I used to use an acetylene reg on propane, the threads are the same but with the regulator open more than just a crack would supply too much gas, I swapped it for a propane reg for a more useful adjustment range. I'm pretty sure I asked on here years ago and someone (Probably BS ) assured me it was fine.

the red acetylene hoses shouldn't be used on propane only the the orange ones .the gas attacks the hose but god knows how long before it does . it just identifies what gas is supposed to be in it

It beggars beyond belief why theres no universal hose one size fits all

Your ok for at least a couple of years yet @Shedendman, I have been using propane with acety hose for at least 6 years. I do use a variable propane pressure reg, although acety reg will fit propane bottle, just the band around the bottle valve is sometimes in the way.
