I have tried using vinegar to derust some car parts with mixed results. It does not remove hard encrusted rust easily. Found it better to remove as much rust off using power tools first, then use the vinegar to remove rust from inaccessible areas and pits.

Use a wire brush and plenty of water rather than a plastic/nylon brush. Dry off well straight after washing otherwise you get a flash rust. I used compressed air to final dry.

Found that it removes plating as well as rust. Not ideal if you want to keep good plating.

What do you use to prevent the vinegar removing the plating?

Tried masking with grease and gaffer tape, latter was better but the vinegar eventually gets under the masking.

Anyone else experimented with vinegar and can help with plating issue?

I tried vinegar and it worked - just about.

I found that Swarfega metal preserver (5 litres), which I bought from B&Q for about £8, and is diluted to at least 15 litres, is much better than vinegar if you really want to use chemicals.

De-rusting with electrolysis is much better than either vinegar, Swarfega, citric acid, Kurust or anything else I've tried and I'm fairly sure it won't remove even a single grain of plating, or any of the underlying steel.

De-rusting large objects that you can't dip into a tub can also be coated with cheap tomato ketchup. Cheap ketchup has quite a large amount of vinegar in it so it's a similar process to the dipping. I always wire brush the chunks off first then the ketchup and the sandpaper/wirebrush wheel.

Wonder if brown sauce is better Oz, theres molases in that im sure ive seen that used as well.

try Branston Pickle, it always works for me, just smear it all over your parts and you'll find them cleaner than a new pin !

I found tesco's ketchup better at it than asda's. Sainsbury's was too much to experiment with.

But generally anything with a decent amount of vinegar in it, smear it on your big bits and leave for a little while.
