All thanks to this forum was it a continous seam. Although last Saturday things werent going as well, which is why im equiping myself with gas, my dads garage and a whole, patient, weekend!

Cheers daf45. It aint that smart but its tough and MOTable I reckon. The new hole I found is rather massive though, so im going to give the welder a good service and checkover first-Its a tatty old thing. The main problem I have with it is that the earth wire has come off the welder, and I cant seem to solder it on so as it wont stick to the ?copper?, All I have done is solder onto the wires end and I use a monky wrech to hold it on. Also, im sure last time I used gas it was leaking, so ill need to spend a few hours sorting the welder I reckon.

There is a thread on here about how important a good earth is. Consider undoing the case and fitting a whole new cable inside properly with a decent clamp on the end. New tips and proper gas help get a smooth weld too. If my first 'vehicle-welding' turns out as well as that I'll be chuffed.

Cheers for the favourable comments guys. Its not everyones cup of tea, but I cant wait till I can start driving it. The best bit for me is the steering. Its completely powered, not power assisted, with arftificial feel, and auto center return, even when standing still.. Id love a DS one day, or perhaps if I win the lottery, an SM (the one with a Masserati V6 engine). Its not a deisel BTW. Its a 2 litre OHC petrol Renault engine from the Renault 25, also used in the Espace up till the late 90's. It was on Ebay November last year. It was local to me, didnt meet the reserve, so I went to have a look at it and made the guy an offer. I didnt realise it was going to be quite so much work though. When I was inspecting it for rust, the guy kept pointing out a certain area on the sill, saying its a bit rusty there, but I couldnt see it, so I assumed it was very solid if that was what he was most worried about! However, I have had to weld 4 patches all in all, one of which was actually where he mentioned, but it didnt necessarily have to be done as it was the inner skin of double skinned metal.

Thanks to the welding guides on this website, my CX now has 12 months MOT

The last weld wasnt pretty. The welder decided its feed rate would constantly vary, and im sure I was having earthing problems as it was fine if I just welded a plate on the floor, but on the car, things werent going too well. However, with grinding, and going over again on a higher power setting, it became a seam all the way round the patch so I painted it in anti rust primer and took it for the MOT. They were going to fail it on a tyre, but offered to change it for the spare for a fee. I agreed, but then they couldnt work out how to remove the wheel because of the suspension and wheel covers, so they asked me to do it for them. They didnt notice the spare was narrower than all the other tyres... but I just wanted an MOT. Ill get two tyres later in the week to go on the back for peace of mind.

Yeah, but the guy who has the site hasn't updated it in ages. So he's either given up on it or doesn't have the time/money?

I'm a DS restorer. Never had a CX but may get one in the future. Yours looks tidy.

I wouldn't have used a SIP welder on it though. As you mentioned, the feedrate is terrible on those machines. I would definitely save up and get a decent welder - the car deserves it!

Where abouts are you located and are you a member of the CCC?
