patches will keep the metal from rusting up and out from under the flares in future....best that you tackled that now. looks appropriate for the application. nice little truck JP
Managed some time on the tub with the lighter nights and dryer weather. Carefully removed the inner bit of the fuel filler so it can be properly cleaned up (and a couple of small patches tigged up on the bench). Started descaling the underside and found 3 small areas that failed the slag hammer test so theyve been cut back to solid and plated. Whacked some spray chassis paint on just to keep the weather off until it all gets properly painted.
fantastic weather for grafting over the weekend. Finally tackcled the inner filler pressing which had turned to confetti where it was tacked to the outer panel and the seam sealer had failed. its no the prettiest but tiger seal will cover most of it and it will be getting a good bead of it round the inside. went to firwood paints on Friday and after disscussion with the paint tech, plumped for a 2 pack epoxy zinc chromate primer. 2 litres have gone on the underside, and Ive cut steel for a new splash guard. Ive kept it more open than the old one was so it can be hosed out regularly instaed of accumulating crud.
got 3 good coats of epoxy zinc chromate primer on the top bits and bulkhead, its had 2 good days of sunshine to bake it on and its superb stuff
Extremely busy few days. Finished the new splashguard, then it was time for paint. 3 coats of stonechip underneath. Flatted the paint and filled a few dinges. 3 coats epoxy zinc chromate high build primer. Grafitti applied and wet flatted down ( till ten last night). Up at 7 this morning to hit the topcoat, its been a long time since I woke up excited about anything. Been a bit overenthusiastic and got a couple of runs, but Im sure they’ll flat down. Back to work for a rest tomorrow
The finish looks superb on the black, I know what you mean about feeling excited about spraying the finish coats. What brand and type of 2k epoxy did you use?
Thank you everyone ! Ian I used the Octoral from Jawel Paints https://www.jawel.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=142_25 Ive had paints from them in the past and always been pleased with the quality and level of service Ordered a litre ( by the time you've added hardener and thinners you have nearly 1 3/4 litres ). Ive enough leftover to paint the plastic wheelarch flares, and blow in a couple of scrapes and dings on the main body. going to correct the runs and a couple of bits of lemon peel and overspray this weekend
Took the arch flares off to paint last night (only 3 because the body shop did one when it was in having a no fault accident repair on the front end). I had a good idea what would be under the offside. Wasnt fit to paint this morning so plumbed the compressor into the garage with the regulator accessible, and put some decent filtration on the compressor. Weather had cleared up at teatime so instead of eating I fired up the gun and did the arch flares, I think Ive got the hang of the 2k stuff and the gun again, throttled it back a bit and put 2 coats on without any runs or major lemon peel. Tweaked the paint screw right back and managed to blow in a little section where I’d burnt through to the primer with the polishing machine, Doggo’s impressed anyway
Arches back on. Full day machine compounding and polishing the body. Itching to get the new tub on now
Thought Id take the front grille off and sort the stonechips, hit it with a polydisc in the grinder and burnt off all the electroplated chrome underneath, yaay... thought Id take a cutting disc to it while it was farked anyway and update it a bit. Ive also taken a cutting disc to one of the chromed cooling racks in the kitchen cupboard. I think it’ll look ok
