You know that might be an interesting idea. You would think that there would be something like that for sale around the docks? I must speak to my narrowboat mate and see what he might know.

Usually plenty of things for sale around the docks but never heard them described as buckets before but I can imagine that might be quite apt

You are very kind. I may go for that if I can't find some stainless.

I spent £30 for a hot dipped galvanised round screen a bit bigger then the 700 mm dia container I 've buried and mortared in .. it's strong , made from 5 mm flat bar and TIG welded up .
I've got a 250 kg lump of pink granite ( looks like two 900 mm tall pink slugs reared up & entwined ) plus about 150 kg of other smaller rocks set on it so the fountain's water and any rain can get down in to the barrel. It's been in place nearly 11 years and is free of rust rashes .

That screen has a very useful feature . It has a lift in out section at one side approx. 200 mm x 200 mm that will allow me to take the pump out , drain /wash out the barrel and refill it . Found out after nine years that decaying leaves and blown in grit etc.had put a thick layer of crud on the bottom of the barrel and it was starting to get pulled into the pump ..... blocking the outlet jet in the pink slugs .

It was so easy to clean it out , put a modified pipe into the outlet & ran it off away from the fountain till it stopped pumping . Then switched off the pump and used my wet vacuum to suck out the remaining 20 litres of sludge . Flushed it several times more with the powerwasher set on wide spray cone till I was certain it was totally clean then put the the pump back in after emptying a bucket of clean water with it to ensure it too was clean /clear of crud and replaced the covering stones on the cover .

If you are going to cover it It should really be strong enough to support a person, weldmesh is ok but unless properly framed will bend and collapse with a bit of weight on it, its only a small area I would make a proper fabricated grill to go over it, I made one for a pond from stainless, mild steel will do the job just as well though,

A nice hefty angle iron frame to sit in the hole with 8 or 10mm diameter bars welded in and a smaller frame in the centre with a hinged section for the bucket would be practical.

But it'd never keep the cat out. Good ideas re leaving something for the kitten to climb up if the worst should happen, like the ladders for bath spiders.....

Post #198in that link has steps with the same sort of stuff my tub cover was made of then hot galv dipped . I hate to think of the slugs falling through , as it took days to get a working tripod to place them in position in the first place & now I'm 10 years older & nearly 70 .
