Project bike Ural

Hi Guys
I have just taken possesion of a Urinal motorbike, year? early 80's we think.
Problems identified
No spark,
dodgy carb, off a citroen 2CV,
dodgy brakes,
dodgy mural.
It is a handsome thing and has great potential to become a vehicle rather than just a thing.



Does anybody have a manual for this contraption or know where I can get hold of one.
I knoiw B all about carbs and points.
Oh well I did say that I need a bit of a challenge.

Long term plans for it?
Plan A was to get it going and make my own bodywork, and have it as a roling showcase for my work as a sculptor.
plan B? maybe get it going and keep it as an old slag.
What about the mural? I dont want people thinking that I am an old hippy but I kind of respect the the fact that it was somebody else's idea. The gang all reckon that it has to go.

Is it a BMW? It looks like a BMW badge on the tank-not sure??
I also think it looks quite an old bike-i would have thought older than you suggest. Where did you get it from?

It's going to be a Ural with a mural eh ? A friend of mine converted one into a trike years ago, that one looks tidy compared to his. It's a Russian copy of BMW which never changed from it's original state just like the WWII military models.

Much as I admire your sculptures, that looks too clean and straight (photos can lie!) for Plan A, so can I vote for Plan B please?

Or Plan C - convert it to the version with the powered sidecar.

Can’t agree. If it is to be anything other than its original colour then matt Khaki is the only option!

Aw, that's a smart bike. Something like that would make me want to stick me lid back on, after all these years of rattly old 4wd comfort. Nice one.

Shouldn't be too much of an effort to get it rolling again - got bikey mechanic mates you can ply with zoider Chunko?

Nato green or camo would be a good scheme for it and really it needs a chair on the side, it's what they were made for. Mount a machine gun on the front for effect as well

I think my predates the one in the PDF, certainly re the ignition. I guess the points may have corroded, so I will have a look their first. This might take some time.
Mart, 'Urinal' pun on ural, it is a pisstake on a vintage BMW made in Russia.

I am swapping it with a mate for a piece of sculpture. His idea of 'doing it up' was to fit BMW fridge magnets to the tank and a brake light with the word stop stamped into it, and then he 'fiddled' with the carb.

Ok the mural has to go, at present I am erring towards plan B, but painting it?

I think we have one like that in our BMW dealership and its somewhere in the 70's. I'll take a pitcure with the specs, we had ours in a corner at our Garage and once a BMW german came said it was nice and we put it in our Car Display.
It was restored, but was left 2 years like because of a company incident. And wedismantled the carbs and the tank (which had old gasoline and some rust)
Searched on Interent found some similar BMW bikes.

I love the bike. I'd love a sidecar outfit as apparently they had floor mounted sirens and machine gun mounts as standard. The chinese still make a copy of the Ural, I believe, but the quality is pretty poor particularly in the engine department.

Cigar silencers like yer Brit bikes would be nicer, those look like a bit short from here. Praps front muddie a bit closer and more personal with the front wheel? Prob lose the indicators too. Nice though.
I like the bluey-grey, it's a bit different and subtle. Greyble?

Fix, de-clutter and ride as is, let it carry on acquiring it's own shabby dignity

Muriel, replace it. Praps a modified 'hammer and sickle' one, say gas torch and hammer?

Hi,

lovelly looking bike.

As for the year, if it's UK registered, those upright front number-plates were banned in the late 60's.

If a rider with one of those ran into a pedestrian it tended to slice legs off!
