"Progress" Bench Drill

Ive been on the lookout for a cheap bench drill for a while now and finally managed to bag one on ebay...

for a bargain price of £15!

Its in really good condition - the only damage is holes in the swivel table.

Im not sure if its setup correctly tho as the chuck is very close to the swivel table

That is with the table at the lowest and the drill at the top. Can the shaft (not sure if thats the correct term) be raised so the chuck is nearer to the top?

there may be a depthstop on it which allows holes to be drilled to a repeat depth

this may be stopping it returning fully up

try turning the knob opposite to the handle which may release the drill to go up

If you take a look at the head of the machine there will be a clamp somewhere, you can raise them normally, but i have to say that does look like a pretty old model.


check the top of the machine and look down the hole see how much of the stem is poking into the casting, if it looks like you have some space there then yes it can be raised, providing the clamp will still do its job.


To raise open the chuck up fully, place a block of wood under the chuck and use the quill handle to push it up. It might be a bit sticky and have a seal if its been left untouched for a long while, throw some pen fluid down the hole to help things along. You should not need to use massive force to raise it, it should glide up pretty easily.


A lot of the space is being taken up by the extra long nose on the quill, check to make sure that is not en extension places in the original quill, though i doubt it is, but worth a check.

we used to use them at ''tech'' a good robust machine, the depth is small if you put a machine vice on, you can of course move the table 90degrees round & use the base which is what it's for [bargain of the year for £15!!]

Looks like an extension to me to ,too long to be original,try moving the table to one side and fully extending the quill then take a picture ,might be obvious ......

Here is the quill fully extended

Ive had bit more of look and have removed the plate on the bottom of the quill and dropped the shaft out

By the looks of it theres no way for adjusting the depth on it.

I shall just have to get creative with clamping to the base when i need to drill bigger things! I shall also keep a look out for some morse taper drill bits as well i think!

You could fit a longer column. May be available as a stock size tube. If not, somebody with a big lathe would soon make one for you.

sorry to open an old post but , did you ever get the extension off the spindle ?
that is an extension for sure, probably someone used it for the chuck they had ?
and how long exactly is your main pillar/column of the drill ? it should be around 3 feet. maybe someone had it cut down if its short .
