What would be a fair price to offer?

You see it all depends what use you have for it, it's always nice to own good heavy built machinery but sometimes it's not needed.

I used a basic £50 Clarke bench drill for many years and drilled up to 12mm through 10mm plate, it's accuracy was not perfect but was ok, certainly did everything I wanted for my hobby and occasional paying work.

As I said before, to me the price is too much, to some they will pay that because it's what they have always wanted and at times the heart rules the head.

Also remember the bottom half of a pillar drill is never used, a bench drill on a stand does the same job.

If you check pillar drills completed listings on ebay you will see good drills going for £100 or less.

Personally I think 425 is a little steep. The fact that it's missing parts would lead me to believe it hasn't been cared for well. They are cracking drills well worth the money if in good condition. But spares are hard to get hold of and costly if there is any issues.

I only need it for occasional drilling for Land Rover brackets a £50 Drill would probably do me but part of me thinking is if this drill is never going to wear out then I’m not losing anything having it as it would keep its value. I’m also short on bench space and my benches are a little low. I could make something but then I’d be worried about it falling over.

I think I’m going to check no other issues and offer £350 and see what happens. If I get it I’ll need a chuck guard, an emergency stop button and some advice on how to make a belt cover. I’m hoping I’m in the right place for that sort of advice. :-)

Or a previous owner changed speeds reguarly and removed the cover for ease.

I've seen the cover for mine recently. Not sure where though.

I think the machine shop owner 40 years ago did remove the cover before it came to its current owner but i don’t like the fact it’s incomplete and a bit dangerous without it so I’ll be looking to source or make one.

If this was in really good condition it's easily worth £400.
I bought my Elliott 2g for £125...it works, drills round holes, is all there but a bit knackered. Would I swap this for a new Far East machine? No way!
It may be 2nd hand but you have to balance good quality wear and tear against poor quality new out of the box.

Id offer 300 and maybe go 350 if he doesnt budge. Assuming the gears etc are good.

hi new to the forum just got first welder and looking at a pillar drill. There is an Elliott progress 2gs for sale locally that seems in good condition but it has no belt guard. I like things to be complete. Is it likely I can get a cover from somewhere ? I can’t decide to get it and keep an eye out or make a guard or get something new. Budget is around £400. I have the same drill here...i want a fiver for the drill and £250 for the guard Find a meddings drill guard as they are more common and almost identical

Humm.
I have two Meddings Drilltrus. One I got for free with a mint table, but 3-phase; The other my father bought for the trailer shop in June 1960. I tried to get a new quill shaft, as 'someone' had removed a chuck with a hammer. But while they had a record of the purchase, they could not help with the quill. Actually it is just noticable, but makes little difference in use. Bearing wobble would be different, but easily fixable.
I ran it for ages without the top cover, as I had a two to one reduction with a second motor behind the original. Unless you are a bit Hippy haired I can't see a problem.

Nice drill, but too much money in current condition.

You're unlikely to get anything caught in the belt unless you're completeley stupid or have long hair billowing in the breeze

If you're using it in a business situation, even as a one-man-band you'll need a belt guard or the HSE will make you fit one or even ban you from using it. I was in this situation with an air compressor.

I’ve not bought it. On inspection from a friend either the chuck or the stem was bent so it was running out of true and in high gear it was 180 degrees before the drive picked up (gear damage ?). I think it will be something new for me. Thank you for the advice and information.

A Fobco Star is a lovely drill to use, and also a pleasure to restore too. I love mine, and it’s proving a reliable workhorse, with four speeds ranging from 400 rpm to 4000rpm.

Mine is the same, its simple to turn the chuck the right way by hand so you don't get a bang when you start the motor.

That's normal - it's in the design. You can see this in my thread linked to earlier on.

As Ronan says, turn the chuck in the opposite direction of rotation before starting the motor. You do this anyway because you use all three holes to tighten the chuck - don't you

That's right. In high speed the drive is direct from the pulley to the chuck via the clutch. In low speed the clutch is bypassed and drive goes through the backgear. It's the design of the clutch that gives the 'clunk'.
