Hi,
I’ve been teaching myself to TIG aluminium since the start of the year it have been struggling to get a decent lap weld on 1.6mm.
There was a point where I was okay, but have had a break for a couple of months and now can’t seem to get a puddle started where the top edge doesn’t just melt away.
I’m fine with 3mm and 2.4mm filler/tungsten, and can run a bead on flat 1.6mm plate with a tight arc reasonably well.
I just can’t get a decent lap weld no matter how much I try.
I’m using a 1.6mm lanthanated tungsten with a no.5 cup and 1.6mm filler. I’m trying to get a tight arc and a puddle started as soon as, getting a move on. Not matter what I try though, the puddle splits and the top edge melts away.
I’m going to stop trying to run a bead and just repeat initiating an arc and forming a puddle as a practice exercise. I will need to get on top of this as I have to do some laps in 1.6mm for a project at work. It’d be great if anyone could give me some useful pointers as to where to improve my technique.
Thanks.
