Any suggestions,the message appeared that the ink absorbing sponge was saturated stopping the printer working,so I removed it,squeezed it dry,left overnight,then refitted it today,however the same on screen message is still displayed ,so it won’t work.. Thanks.

Have you tried shouting at it, hitting it, and then giving up and buying another ?
I don't think that the printer actually senses the amount of ink in the absorbent material in the base. It simply calculates how much ink it has gone through, via the printhead priming and cleaning process, and when that cumulative amount exceeds some preset value, up comes the message. There is a chance that it might be something that is possible to reset on some printers, but I've never come across a procedure to do this on any Canon or Epson printers that I've had.

Yes there is a resetter available.
What model do you have.
Some you buy a chip or a new cartridge.
Others you buy a wicked reset key.
I have a 3850 which still works but won't do a power clean. But a new cartridge came today.
I had purged it without power clean.
I also have a 2850 same footprint similar style and waste ink maintenance tank they call them.
No chip but same cartridge fits it. That one needs a wic reset key to reset waste inks.
On the older printers you could get a disc for some. Others you couldn't. These are epsons as I never use anything else.
The new printers not much can be done from the computer . You have to use the screen on the printer, which I hate as it's inconvenient and very small.

same here ive used epsons for a long time and then found the reset tool ( service reset tool )
but ive still got a few epsons as new never used state so im fine for a very long time i also use the ciss ink system as well

for the cannon you need the service reset tool
ive prelooked but dont have the bandwidth to check properly
the tool reference is this or newer check to make sure it will reset your printer or you might need a newer version as i checked the earlier versions than that one and they wont work with your model

if you search enough you can find a free one
also from a quick read up its back to them for a service or its bin fodder
cannon and hp was always expensive on inks its why i went to epson cheaper inks prints great and you can use ciss ink systems with them
