What primer should be used on a panel that has partial break through and the metal is exposed? for example a panel that is showing 20% metal 80% original paint.
Etch should be used on metal but would this react with the existing paint?
As Steve says just go light on couple of coats and if it pickles a little, just dry it out with local heat and flat back a little. subsequent coat will be fine.
I think the quality of paint used by manufacturers varies quite a bit, so its impossible to tell if good or bad primer has been used. If you want the job to last, then i would say strip and re prime with epoxy, if not then just sand and paint.
original factory black electro primer is fine to key and high build etc
if theyre pattern parts try some thinners on it and see if it touches the black , cheapo parts will just be sprayed on rubbish which id advise gets a good sanding back
normally the black stuff is a cataphoretic primer which is designed to keep the rust away during storage not for overpainting. Rule of thumb, if you can wash it off with celly, do so then scuff it up with 400.
