Primer for fresh welds

hi folks thank in advance. Just getting back to my 66 splitscreen for the winter. It's striped, cut and epoxy primered. I'm now ready to cut more and weld, so my question is what is the best way to treat and seal the new welded metal. The plan is to treat as I go, the once all done fill sand and flat to a reasonable standard before getting a professional paint job.

So how to prep the metal, what to use to coat it then fill or fill and then paint? What's the difference between the red lead replacement or the grey primers?

Hi Langy thanks can you recommend a make/ type of epoxy primer in small tins/cans please? I'll be doing relatively small bits, but by bit. I see elsewhere roll wrong it on is fine. Thanks Jason

I have not seen any small pots of epoxy, Lechler is what I use on the body. Express paints will be close to £40 for a litre of the primer plus the hardener and thinner in shipping.

Cost effective but a lot more paint Jotun 87, 4.4l from SML, they seemed to have the best deal at £57. which I use for the chassis and floor.

Ask 10 painters what's the best paint and you'll get 10 different answers , mixing small amounts of 2k primer accurately is difficult >250ml and wastefull, rattle cans are convenient, but a little more expensive.

You can get 2k epoxy in a can too but they have a short shelf life once activated.

I wouldn't trust anything that says its a 1k epoxy.

Maxakarudy is right about wasting mixed up paint, I am for ever mixing small amounts and up binning half of it.

can u not get a touch up gun and mix it in even smaller ammounts, just a thought?

Me I use a galv rattle can for my welds before I paint them

Cheap Upol primer on offer here. I've used this company recently; good service, postage was £7 if I recall. For large areas, it won't be a patch on epoxy with a spraygun I expect, but I have been using it on small areas of my car restoration and it's OK.

I use jotun 87 winter grade epoxy primer on the underneath of my car. I buy 5L cans and mix up 150 ml or 250ml at a time and apply it by brush. you can get 600ml paint measuring cups that have the correct ratios for mixing it (1:4 for winter grade). mix it in the cup, paint it on the vehicle with a brush, put the used brush in the used paint cup, when it has hardened then throw the cup away.

No mate as I use it in litres, just mix up what you need

What's hard about mixing a small amount 2-1 ???

Mixing is not the issue, judging whether you need 150 or 250ml is the tricky bit.
