Primer confusion

Hi there.

Whenever I have a bare metal panel to spray, I will do a few coats of etch primer on the bare metal, then high build over this.

But I have a bare metal panel with a dent in it, half is painted, other half is bare metal. So I have applied filler onto bare metal to fill the dent. Now what primer should I be using? I understand that since there is bare metal it should be etch primed? Will etch primer be okay to spray over the filler, and over existing bits of paint (keyed of course)?

It should be ok to paint over. Just cover the bare metal with couple light Coates then high build primer over that.

i just dust a coat over the metal edges around the filler , doesnt matter if it goes on the filler or old paint

If its steel you don't have to etch it, 2k hi build will stick fine

Also doesn't acid etch cause filler to wrinkle up around the edges? (if sprayed over filler)

and back when i was in a bodyshop we had to etch all bare metal to keep the paint warrenty up , does seem to help as i've reworked a few that were not etched by other folk and they seem to rust worse if its a edge ,but say a middle of the bonnet wont really matter too much

It says on the paint tutorial about troubles with etch over paint edges and filler though.

I have seen on Wheeler Dealer's (i know not the best show) the pro paint guy using etch over existing paint edges and sprayed over quite thickly. I think it was a red car, old classic MG or Triumph or similar.

Anything with a high solvent content will have a potential to soften and pickle a feathered edge of paint and sometimes filler. The worst of all is celly, be it primer or top coat. The only safe bet is to hold it out with 2k primer, guide coat it then flat the guide right out (dont go through it) then it will take whatever you throw at it with no issues. THe primer will go straight on bare steel, old stable feathered repairs, etch or it seems the more modern epoxy to ensure adhesion.

i think i can honeslty say in 16 years painting cars i never had etch wrinkle up a filler edge

yes if its a shoddy flakey paint job then the primer might pick it up , but thats down the to the fact you shouldnt be painting over poor prep

best ignore any paintwork you see on wheel dealers , theyre absolute bandits
