When i first worked in a garage we had someone do mot patching welding, he used to charge by the patch, £25 per patch at the time.
The thing is you can't as people have said before let anyone think for a minuet that you are doing them a favour as you will then be doing favours for people for the rest of eternity. My dad is a civil engineer and he ran his own buisness for a while he never made very much out of it as he made the mistake of doing a few favours for a few people which became a few more people and eventually turned into everyone that ever called with a job for him the problem is after a while everyone starts to expect you to do the job for next to nothing. If they aren't willing to pay even a slightly inflated price upfront then they aren't worth your time as a professional. I'm not suggesting you charge an over inflated price but giving them a quote that covers you if anything dosent go as planned then you can all ways give them the good news it was less when you have finished then they think they have gotten a good deal and will come back.
Lucy Worsley mmmmmmmWise words, as long as they don't tell their mates about you.
And, sorry, but I just couldn't resist......[coat > door]

The difficult part of pricing is most of the work can't be seen until you begin cleaning back.
Only you know how much you value your time, some will weld and grind all day for £50 in their pocket, some will not work for less than £300 a day and some would not even consider it.
More often than not the reason you get asked to give a price is the person does not want to pay garage prices.
I get asked every now and again and have a standard answer...not interested.
