Prices!

Went to pick up some 5mt rough oak planks for a dining table (big familly) and there weren't any. The place usually has a good stock, but not so much and a lot shorter.
Check with a cabinet maker friend and he gave a couple of possibilities after I told him about my experience of his first choice.
Thought I would check with my neighbour, who's son runs a biggish outfit doing custom kitchens and other cabinet work. Well, got an earfull.. How there was very little decent wood about and any really good stuff is being sent to China.. His son had to return half a load as it was rubbish and is having real trouble sourcing good stuff in any quantity. Then he told me about a friend running a structural steel place locally. Does a lot of farm buildings and other big sheds. Prices have jumped recently, 40% mentioned!!! and he is tearing out his hair on quotes and supply.
My supplier did say the other day that prices were going up again, but I didn't ask how much...Better check tomorrow, as I have a couple of quotes out. And they went up noticably a couple of months ago. Also, more gaps in the racks. Had to do a redesign on an outside stair, as the size of flat is not there, so will use two in place. Actually looks nicer too.
In the local paper, there was a piece about prices going up and that many small outfits would be in trouble by years end. Didn't realise that it was biting so soon.

So, any comments from the UK?

Funnily enough - it seems to be being blamed on "dog's breakfast" (or whatever the forumCensor calls it).
But I'm guessing that's just propaganda - cynical moi says that webbox + covid are excuses for profiteering rather than the reasons for price increases.

wood has been in great demand thanks to all the diy and whatnot peeps have been doing over the last year but also import costs skyrocketing too so hardly a suprise.

yeah its same here bounced up a while ago and still high

now the problem is sourcing the gear for your job and adding further than the price is as you know its going to increase again due to short supply

not just the uk thing but vecause of world virus its haveing a real effect on everything

greed and high prices will have a knock on effect our cement is on a short supply for last few weeks and so is plaster its also having an effect on rest of the materials for most of the industrys out there getting to be a real nightmare for everything

My laser cutting bill went up about 15% in February and the last one a few weeks ago went up another 80%. I don't know how long it can go on.

ajobim working on at the mo a big extension the builders waiting for the roof trusses .he got 3 prices the other month . went to order and they said its an extra 20 percent on a few grand he went to the second that gave a price and had only 50 quid diffrence

Sheet steel is in short supply here, and couldn’t get 80 x 5 flat last week - I’ll have a good look at the stock when I’m there tomorrow.

I don’t know about timber - we have a mill nearby that only handles oak, most of it goes for railway sleepers and beams, though they do have a fair stack of planks, though whether they’re ready for sale yet I don’t know.

Go to your local Auction...antiques, furniture etc, ....or second hand shop...........you can get dark oak tables, wardrobes etc for next to nothing.........sanded down and the polyx oil....its the light oak everyone wants
dark wood is cheap as chips....beautiful mahogany tables for 30 quid

You can also get pine.

A friend told me the other day builders merchants are limiting cement to 5 bags per customer!

funny thing is it isn’t the cement that’s in short supply, it’s the plastic for the bags!

Make sure prices allow for price variation on materials at least & a let out regarding finish time if materials are not available

glad i dont have to price bigish jobs still and wait a month till the punter decides then the prices have risen and expect it the same pricegot a lot of jobs on but dont need to price them just time and material take it or leave it

I just put a rider in that only warrants the price for a week. Its not how I like to operate but some steel stockholders are only honouring prices for 24hours at the moment.

Seems to work, I think most people are doing it so its become the norm.

copper prices are going up weekly and the wholesalers acessories have been put up 12 percent and more vat on top

Everything is going up. Logistics has reached crisis point due to a severe driver shortage. Inflation starting to rear it's ugly head. Wages going up due to a big drop in labour from Europe. The only solution is to get rid of all the benefits and make people work for their money but that would be political suicide for any government.

Here u can get any amount of cement (BY the pallet load)...
steel has always been a 24hr price....
cheaper to buy steel than wood.....
40m2 of 1/2 decent treated pine decking 120x18mm thick.....€800 euro's.....

You mean like pensions, ISAs, corporate tax breaks, "charity" status for private schools, etc, right?

There is plenty of wealth around. All government debt is, by definition, someone else's wealth.
